I don't take the risk. I have 3 points, (think of the kittens that died when I was done at 58 about 50 metres after the 50 sign, just 1 mile from the end of the M62, whilst I was braking to 50, on a dry sunday afternoon), and I'm not not sure I understand why others take that risk.

    1) Stupidity.
    2) False plates or a pool car registered through a company which has poor record keeping.

    Exactly my thoughts.
I was done down here in Kent a couple of years ago - 56 in a 50 - bright Summer's day, dual carriageway with barriers, no traffic around (except for the camera van on the bridge).
It does make you think twice before speeding where there are obvious cameras.
I have also seen people doing well over 90MPH on the section of M25 approaching the M4 exit for Heathrow - those cameras are working.

I see this quite a lot thanks to the work they are doing on the M1, I can only assume that some drivers don't know what average speed is.

It did cross my mind, but are that many people really that stupid? Are their licences that unimportant to them?

Dont you notice half of them brake when they get to each set of cameras and then accelerate again? would suggest the answer to your first question is Yes

People frequently speed past cameras and I suspect a lot dont know what the "average speed camera" actually means. I doubt they are all on false plates or have insider knowledge but are simply chancing it.

With reports of the fact that M25 variable speed cameras arent operational and the one in Cambridge etc I suspect more people are getting confident that they can get away with it

I also engage cruise control when I hit the average speed sections.

@prothet of doom: I thought that there was a slowing down distance after a sign - am I wrong?

Of course, in an average speed section, you could presumably do 90 for the 1st 50 yards and then 40 for the next 200 and it would average out to 50...

If you mean the speed limit sign then you're wrong, you slow down on the approach to it.

I travel that section of the M25 every day in both directions. In 7 years I have never seen a single camera flash on any part of the motorway and I know exactly where the cameras are.

You mean the variable speed limit ones? Since when? It was in the press 18 months or so again that they arent operational and havent seen anything since to say they were both functioning and approved yet

It's probably a temporary 50 and cameras still set at 70 - so anything up to 77 is their safe zone.
I'd be surprised if you estimated the speed that they passed you at correctly.

Not correctly, but accurately. It's not difficult to accurately estimate someone's speed.
  • I can concur that the M25 cameras arent operational, and to my knowledge never have been.

I'm a regular on Pepipoo and and say with certainty we never see any cases from that section of the VSL on the M25.
