I wouldn't cash the TAX. Makes it so much easier for the buyer if car is taxed, he may be able to drive away on his existing insurance.

Are you sure about that? I strongly suspect that it would be extremely unusual for anyone to have an insurance policy that lets them drive a car they have just bought on an existing insurance policy.

Not sure how many people will be prepared to buy a car they can't test drive (I wouldn't), but good luck!

Most - if not all - of the few remaining "somebody else's car" clauses on insurance explicitly require the car to be covered by a policy.

I've taken out a policy on a "might buy" car, purely so I can test drive it, with the intention of cancelling if I didn't buy it.
  • Surely if the car is not kept on a public place there is no requirement to have it insured? It's only as the tax runs out that it needs to be SORN'd.

The issue would be any test drives etc.

I sold a Fiesta recently that was taxed but the insurance had expired so it was kept on my driveway. Potential viewer came, wanted it subject to a test drive so I just purchased 24 hour insurance online which was immediate.

Precisely. Which would not cover either a test drive, or the new owner to drive the car away.

No. If it is not declared SORN then it must be insured. The law changed fairly recently on this.

Since 2011 keeping an uninsured but taxed car on your driveway makes no difference to keeping it on the road as far as committing the offence of having no insurance.

If you are happy to have an uninsured car on your driveway (it can still be stolen, set on fire etc), then you must sorn it (and surrender the tax).

It is different - leave it on the road, and you're actively committing a "no insurance" offence. If it's on the drive, then it's only a paperwork "no SORN" offence.

    No.

If you don't insure it you get done for no insurance, not for no sorn!

Penalty £100 fixed penalty or court with max £1000 fine or clamp/seizure/destruction

    Yep, exactly.

Park the car on the road, uninsured, and you're looking at a LOT more than that... IN10 gets you 6+pts, for a start. Max £5k fine, discretionary ban.

Parking on the road uninsured gets the same penalty as parking on private land uninsured (but include seizure/clamping) - your penalties are for using/driving an uninsured car!
