Tesco car insurance WARNING

I took out a new fully comprehensive car insurance policy with Tesco on November 3rd which I paid in full for the year. They then cancelled my policy on January 8th without any notice. They said that they never received proof of my 7 years no claims which I did send them. I was then pulled by police on January 13th and told my car wasn't insured which I was completely unaware of. I called Tesco whilst in the police car to find out what was wrong, they said they had cancelled my policy and could not reinstate it. My car was then seized and I was charged with no insurance which is a £300 fine and 6 penalty points if I don't take it to court.
Tesco claim they had sent my letters which I never got. It changed to emails because it I took the policy out online. Then it was back to letters after I asked for proof of this. It seems that the admin team have been lying because I never received any letters or emails telling me my policy would be cancelled. A simple call to me or my previous insurer would have fixed this matter in seconds, but due total incompetence from Tesco staff I now face a criminal record, thousands in hiked insurance quotes, a fine of £300, 6 penalty points, £150 to the impound garage and extreme stress to me and my family.
Please avoid Tesco at all costs. Its an absolute disgrace what has happened and the way they have treated me on this matter. They are unwilling to accept blame when I have done absolutely nothing wrong. I wish now I had stayed with my previous insurer Hastings with was only £10 more to do. I have contacted the financial ombudsman and will speak to my lawyer tomorrow. Hopefully this will be fixed but either way i'm still out hundreds of pounds.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? What was the outcome?

Surely if you were not insured due to their negligence you could sue?
Then they would have to come up with proof of what they say or admit liability.0 -
I though that these insurance company's spoke to each other to check details how is it that they never seem to speak about about NCD's?0

I suspect that there is a bit more to this than meets the eye.0

Called my previous insurer today for more proof of my no claims to bring to the lawyers which they have sent to me. I also asked them if Tesco could have contacted them for my no claims and they said yes all they had to do was call them.
I've been looking at a review centre and apparently this negligence by Tesco insurance has happened to lots of people. I will be suing them if it is not resolved by the financial ombudsman first.0 -
why were you pulled over by the police ?0

No insurance?
OP, it's not much consolation but be thankful the police didn't crush your car after they seized it!0 -
I was pulled by the police as it flagged up saying I had no insurance.
The car would have been crushed, if I didn't collect it within 14 days, I had to pay a fee and take out a new insurance policy that cost me nearly £200 more than my previous insurance with Tesco before I could release the car and this being before the remaining months of my Tesco policy was refunded to me. I was lucky I could borrow money from family to pay for all this at this time of year or my car probably would have ended up crushed.0 -
So let me get this straight. The OP:
- Sets a policy up, doesn't send the NCD (from the eyes of the insurer)
- Has policy cancelled but doesn't read cancellation notice through the agreed medium (online).
- Gets pulled over due to being uninsured.

Let me set you straight. I set up new policy and sent my NCD to them.
They did not send me ANY emails or letters telling me they did not receive it and would cancel my insurance. They also did not try to phone me either.
They obviously did not send anything as I get all my letters so theres no problem with the post and they have my correct address.0 -
You need to read the whole post Smithers, not just skim over
