Subway no longer accepting Contactless Cards due to 'fraud'?

  • It says 'MOST' however the bad PR that could be created if many cards were fraudulently used at Subway could be damaging...

Anyway I was just saying what I was told today by a Subway worker!

And inevitably they are talking about direct charges. Inevitably the merchant fees they are paying in part relates to the number of issues they have and so even if they arent subject to chargebacks or other ways of loosing the funds they may find their merchant rates going up if they are being particularly heavily targeted for fraud.

Bit like when you ask for a dash of one of the sauces, and they still proceed to drown the sandwich with half the bottle.

All Subway stores in the UK are franchises so I suspect this will just be the policy of the franchise holder and would not be nationwide.

Contactless can break if the card is bent.

There is stuff on Youtube etc about how to disable it but it seems risky. A possible threat is from opportunistic skimming in crowded situations. Since there is no physical theft, I don't know how the banks would respond.

I keep mine wrapped in tinfoil which is supposed to stop it being read.

Having it with other contactless cards does the same job. More than one contactless card (Of any sort, work badge or Oyster will do) makes them both unreadable if they are within about 2 or 3 cms of each other.

To be perfectly honest there is no need for criminals to skim card data like this when they can skim far more cards and get PINs with cash machine skimmers.
