I'm in a similar position. DVLA have had the details of my condition from my specialist for over 20 weeks now and they say my "case is waiting to be seen by our medical advisors, the reason for the delay is due to the high volumes of work within our medical section."
I've also enlisted the help of my MP: no news as yet, though!0 -
I got my MP to contact DVLA, and that did the trick!
My file went straight to the top of the list and I got a decision within 48 hours.
Total time from DVLA getting the information to making a decision: five and a half months.
So, contact your MP if you're fed up with waiting!0 -

OP it's your lucky day, the "official" government representative is on these forums looking for peoples feedback on the DVLA.

Hi Rosie Flowers!
I am the official rep for the House of Commons, so am unable to provide any information or advice relating to the problems you are facing (however I note this thread dates back to January) but I can recommend contacting your MP as crct mentions above.
If you are unsure who your MP is you can find out at http://findyourmp.parliament.uk/ (all you need is your postcode).
The House of Commons Transport Select Committee (which scrutinises the Government and holds it to account) is doing an inquiry into peoples' experiences of the Government's motoring agencies - if you would like to inform the Committee of your experiences please visit: Online Survey: Government Motoring Agencies: the user experience

Hi Rosie Flowers,
Just wondering how you are getting on after original post; have you got your licence back yet?
I am in the same position as yourself; August 2012 Licence Revoked on Medical Grounds...
29 Nov. 2013 Re-Application made to DVLA
20 Dec. 2012 DVLA awaiting updated medical reports from my GP and Consultant.
13 March 2014 Request for fee payment from DVLA
(cheque sent- and cashed by DVLA)
23 June 2014 Medical exam by DVLA appointed Doctor
(should hear result back from DVLA in 9 weeks)
20 Aug. 2014 Update; case now with Medical Adviser
(will be notified when decision made, could be 9 weeks)
30 Sept. 2014 E-mail inquiry sent to DVLA looking for information.
(processing a back log -- could take up to 9 weeks)
20 Oct. 2014 Phoned DVLA -- told case passed to Medical Adviser on 1st Sept!
( ...Ditto ...9 weeks)
6 Nov. 2014 Phoned DVLA -- no further information
( ...Ditto ...9 weeks, plus I may have to reapply if more than 1 year has passed since original application received!)
13 Nov. 2014 E-mail sent to start invoking complaints procedure as I am unhappy with the service provided.
15 Nov. 2014 Still awaiting acknowledgment.0 -

Just renewed Cat C[+E] and D[+E] , age 63, as required.
Medical, and eyesight, exams done beginning of August. [Categories expired end of August]
Telephoned as required [once correct extension number identified]....early September. Spoke to real person [as distinct from automated responses]....informed that further medical information being sought [ie, contacting GP]....but......I could continue to lawfully use those categories, [until such time as DVLA say I cannot!].
[Luckily I retained my card & paper licences, as allowed, being an Instructor]
Received renewed..and happily, correct, licences back, end of October!
12 weeks, from medicals to the brown envelope.
That, it appears, is a reasonable timeframe for category renewals!
The biggest problem I found was actually trying to speak to someone at DVLA who was in the right department!
Getting past the automated exchange can be a never ending nightmare.
I found the easiest solution was to EMAIL.......the response I got was quick, and gave me a contact telephone number which was not listed elsewhere!!
Some delays can be at the applicant's end, ie, doctors, etc.No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -

:)Update: Licence finally reinstated November 2014 -- One year from start to finish :j0 -
He didn't see the point.
Because its an offence not to?
Mrs has a notifiable condition but consultant says OK to drive. Cannot remember how long the first time took but when the license came back it was a 1 year only.
When she renewed it this year it took them 4-5 months to review it and again sent her another 1 year license but she was told that if her Dr says its ok to continue driving (they did) then she could continue whilst they assess the case.
Part of the delay was because she forgot to tick the dont/do need glasses box on the form and so it was returned to her at one point.0
