OS Singlies - We Do It Our Way!

I'm currently debating using nematodes myself to kill off slugs. I presume they also kill snails?? Does anyone know if nematodes work for both, or are they just a snail thing?
Not quite sure which is the culprit for large holes in leaves and suspect it might be snails, rather than slugs, that are wreaking the damage basically.
A few young lettuce just totally vanished the other day and not sure whether that is more likely to be the work of slugs or snails.
Perennial type weeds are also a problem here, ie bindweed and brambles keep popping their heads up. Am hoping they will get fed-up with trying at some point. I've certainly thought "I swear its not my imagination that things grow a good bit quicker here than I am used to". When you have gone out for a walk in a nearby nature reserve and spotted ferns taller than yourself then it does make you wonder. I guess the plus side to that is some of my veggies (obviously the ones not that popular with The Slimes, as I designate both types of pest) are growing to absolutely ginormous size too and I'm there thinking "I thought cabbages did about 4 helpings and here's me taking just 2 leaves off for my greens with dinner at night". I'm not THAT keen on cabbage, so am running out of ideas to use it after I've done cabbage as standard green veg, then cabbage as bubble and squeak. Wondering just what else I can do with cabbage...0 -
Pickled cabbage?
Have you ever had sweet cabbage?, normally red. But may work with green i'm not sure. Cook with apple, sugar and vinegar. The same as the Ikea sweet red cabbage you can buy, nice with roasts if you like sweeter things too as an accompaniment.
Cabbage (finely sliced) with peas, fried crispy bacon and cream as a veg dish.
The hen friends you now have??
Compost.
Coleslaw.
Running out of ideas now.
EDIT...was on some thread other day and some people were swearing by nematodes....others had mixed views.
I have also considered copper strips, but again mixed reviews....and came across something today and can't remember name now...will hunt it out.
Diatomacious earth?...thaat seems to get good reviews. i'd rather have cat poo as flipping slugs and snails. On th thread I was on apparently loads of snails this year.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -

Thanks for making me welcome. I can't promise that I will post a lot but will certainly try and keep up to date with this thread.
I will away and start at the beginning of this thread...umm 104 pages  ... I may be some time...A good life is when you assume nothing, do more, need less, smile often, dream big, laugh a lot, and realise how blessed you are.

yes, was bad timing for my post...I meant leeks, but hey, the French use the snails so why not...stomach heaves
It's a very MSE use for them...slugs are no good for eating, though.
The Diatomaticous earth (gawd knows how to spell it or pronounce it!) will just wash away in the rain, I'm afraid. It's what I use for mite control in the henhouse. So is fine where the rain can't get to.
Honestly, the only method to reduce numbers really is to go out with a torch and catch the ruggers, and put in a bucket of salty (very salty) water. Even then, some survive and climb out. I let those ones go, as I admire their spirit!

It'll be good for helping you sleep, that's for sure. None of us actually have lives or anything exciting happening :rotfl:

I have an exciting life, I'm learning to draw circles...:p:D
Calico, have you a recipe for the nettle conditioner and how do you apply the olive oil? and does it have to be extra virgin?
You have super thick hair! Mine was like that once upon a time, I have had stress related hair loss but it always grew back, albeit taking a couple of years or so.
Welcome 3forholidays, sorry forgot earlier.0 -
I'm going to buy salt......lots of salt...
I'm going to put it the other side of my fence so they don't wanna come in, will hop over next door and do same and keep doing this until they have told all their mates....how many mates can a slug have?(snails are slightly more attractive....as basically their body is hidden..but are still to be driven away.
To be fair I havent eaten any apple mint yet....it's the ruddy carnage they leave....my plant now looks carp.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -

I don't at hand for the nettle conditioner....i will have a hunt for it as I did save it.. It involved collecting large amounts of the stuff and boiling it down I can remember that.
My super thick hair is very fine, and way less than what I used to have honestly, I can show you pictures.
My hair loss with the alopecia patch was stress related, that's how I know the massage thing works.....well for me it did.
Any olive oil will do. Olive oil is an emollient , so good for hair and skin.....just whack it on,(when you have warmed it in your palms...dont chuck whole bottle on) leave for a while, then put shampoo on FIRST to wash it off.
Skin....not that you need it Byatt as you have lovely skin to be honest....but rub some in your hands until warm, rub on face, leave, get up and continue as normal.
Edit....my cat is just two circles if asleep....or if not, two circles and the odd bit of leg poking out...it will be a doddle to draw her.xYep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D.......
