Car insurance Advice for my 17 year old

My son is 17 in 3 weeks. He is in full time employment and has bought his own car.

1. How does he officially get insurance quotes. Every time he puts his date of birth in a search engine...it will not quote as he is still 16 but he needs to have prices and quotes before his 17th birthday.

2. Does he get a "learner" policy (if they exist) when he is 17 and gets his provisional license with mum and dad as named drivers. Then when he passes his test do we cancel this & look for a different poicy when he passes his test . If so would we get refunds and how do we know how long he will need before he passes? (We have looked at Collingwood Learners insurance)

3. he wants to look at a telematics box insurance as it is cheaper and rewards good drving but he has to drive to work often during the night and in the early hours as part of his job , also at rush hour times - in addition he will be covering about 12000 miles a year as his work is a distance away. Will this all make telematics possible? - the policies we have looked at have a night curfew - but he will drive a lot between 11pm and 6am !

4. after passing his test he will be driving work vehicles also but not to commute to & from home.

Thanks in advance for advice :)

What do you mean when you say he needs to drive to work in the night? until he passes his test he will need a competent driver with him wherever he goes.
When he puts his dob in is he putting down his 17th birthday as the start date?
When he passes his test he can expect the cost of insurance to increase vastly but if hes learning for a year he will have 1 yrs ncd to use.

  • John thanks for your post - he has a job where he starts work sometimes at 2am or 4am depending on when he is called out - currently we, his parents drive him in or a work colleague picks him up - what i was trying to say is that when he passes his test he will be driving to work in the night and early hours himself.

He bought the car already and not even old enough to take lessons.

Is it taxed and insured? If not you need to SORN it and keep it off the road.

You can play around with the quotes.. BUT... Making changes could show up on the computers systems as potential fraud.
They get bits of your computers information, Your IP address as well as the personal data you enter.
So just changing your name or using a different computer will still show them the quotes were done at the same IP address.

Getting a car before getting quotes was not the best idea also. You may find that particular model is a lot more to insure.

Insuring as a learner can be fairly cheap. But when he passes his test it could increase 10 fold...

I could insure a KA for £400 for my daughter as a learner. But A few pennies off £3000 after passing her test.
Spotted a Freelander for sale cheap... She would love one of those. But the cheapest quote was £5800 i think....

Thanks for post - car is kept in our garage - hes only just bought it , it isnt insured as it said in my original post he is looking for insurance . He is 17 in 3 weeks - what is the point of declaring sorn for 3 weeks - by the time DVLA sort the paperwork - it would need to be back off sorn again. We encouraged him to get a car ready for his 17th birthday . He need to get his test passed asap so he is not relying on us transporting him to work - getting his test passed and on the road is essential - we live in the middle of the country miles from civilisation !
What i was saying is i think its very important to be able to get a quote for the 17th birthday a few weeks before, its ridiculous this does not seem possible without putting in some false age quotes !

He can do dummy quotes now to get a good idea of the cost and insurers he can use by putting in a false dob.

Otherwise he can try phoning for quotes or visit a local broker (not swinton).

Buying a car before he passes his test seems a bit premature.

My eldest took four attempts to get through the theory test and then a further 3 practicals. He was 20 when he could drive alone.

I assume the car has been SORNed.

Why the need for quotes now? He already has the car, so no matter what the price is, i take it you will be insuring the car and keeping it?

Just do quotes on his actual birthday. Buy online and he is instantly covered

Yes, as a learner you insure him on provional license as main driver, with parents as additional drivers.

When he passes his test, you have to let the insurance company know and they amend the policy and requote. His premium will most likely treble at that point. But youll prob find that the premium increase is cheaper if he sticks with his current insurer and does the amendment, rather than swapping insurer. Tbh, the longer you delay taking your test, the more NCB you build up and this will be taken into consideration at renewal time so price is kept down.

DD got a car as a learner. Cost £1k whilst on provisional. Went up to £3k the day she passed her test. Then back down to £800 once she had 1 years NCB

You need to read up on CIE. A car has to be insured or declared SORN nowadays.

I hope he has a lot of savings - at a ball park you should estimate £1k for provisional licence and £3k for after he has passed - this could obviously be higher or lower based on where you live and the type of car.
I don't believe under 18s can enter into a credit agreement so paying monthly won't be an option
If it is his car and he will be the main driver, do not be tempted to get him insurance in anything other than that when he passes, however tempting it may be to have a parent down as a policy holder/main driver to get the quotes down, this would be classed as fronting and has serious implications

Some scaremongering and nonsense on here. 3 weeks, the most the dvla will do is send a letter saying the car's not on mid, even if they notice in that time. Best prices now are on Collingwood learners, short term policy is cheaper than annual, pro rata, but you don't get any refund on the short term, so it's a gamble on when he passes. Then move to mainstream insurer, topcashback's comparison offer better prices there. Do a dummy quote, false name, altered dob to make him 17 today, and a close address.
