Or maybe even write to his vicar/priest/pastor pointing out that he is giving his religion a bad name.

But he isn't - he's following their beliefs. The Brethren don't really care what other people think - they live within a community of other Brethren. And they don't have clergy like most other Christian groups.

I'm sure one of their beliefs isn't that it's ok to rip off non believers. That won't be in the little book he carries and whilst the chief of church may not care what others think, he won't want anything to potentially impact negatively on them.

It will have been quite right - in his eyes - to solve a problem on his land and he would have felt quite justified in ignoring what the godless harlot (!) next door said about cutting the trees down rather than just lopping them.

It sounds like he's stolen your wood and attempted to coerce you into paying an inflated and possibly fraudulent invoice. The former's a police matter, and 111 is your friend. The latter's only your problem if you get involved. Refuse to pay, and tell him that the courts are available to him if he wants his money. It's not worth trying to maintain good neighbour relations, because he certainly won't be: like most religious fanatics, common decency and manners won't be on his agenda.

    Hi

I used to work for a Forestry company, ok this wasn't trimming/felling trees on domestic properties (we did farmers property etc) but we used to have to have written permission from the landowner for every single piece of work.

My initial thought is, didn't the firm/person who carried out the work ask someone to sign a form and if they did then your neighbour can't agree to work being carried out on your land.

You can enforce special permission, if the landowner refuses to sign for work that is essential to be done, but you'd be in negotiation with the company about it beforehand, not have the first thing you know about it is when you hear the tree falling as you eat breakfast.

My suggestion is you seek some legal advice before paying.

I think they are allowed to come in if there is genuine immediate worry about serious damage - and it sounds as if there might have been.
I also think it is possible that the rather large charge was made because the tree surgeon came out as an emergency (to his good frinds)

I think that if you were in (sounds as if you were) and they didn't give you any chance to discuss options, then you have a good moral case for doing as posters suggest and offer a standard charge.
I would certainly be making the point that you had no chance yourselves to assess the damage or potential danger and deal with it.

Am interested in a religion that forbids speaking to neighbours and allows members to overcharge for services - I can think of times I might have liked to belong!
. They aren't allowed to come in and o that its caked trespass and criminal damage

The wood is in his garden, he said a family member is having it.

Huh? From your trees? It's your wood. The law is absolutely clear about this. If he doesn't return it, it's theft. He can't have it both ways - either they're your trees in which case he returns the wood or they're his trees in which case he pays for the work to chop them down.

He always asks to speak to "my man" !!! He has obviously noted I do not wear a wedding ring and living in sin is a definite no no for brethren. He always carries a leather bound book when he knocks I am assuming it is some sort of prayer book and it is meant to save him from our evilness!!!

Fwiw I don't see much difference in him ( a reasonable presumption to presume) judging you for being un married and then judging him for his prayer book. Freedom to believe what we want , whether the rest of us like those beliefs or not, is important part of life here I think.

I would certainly be tackling this head on though, do you want the wood back? ( Do you ave a fire ) Sounds like him putting a fence up is in your favour really.

I certainly think some clarity about boundaries needs to be drawn.
