Elderly ex-pat nightmare,,any advice?

I've recently returned from living in a European country, and even speaking the language it can be difficult to get round the systems and bureaucracy, and even the locals had problems as I discovered when I asked for advice from friends.
Three thoughts occur. Firstly, I think you need to rid your mind of the notion that the flat is "worth €200k", it's not.
Secondly, the rent you are paying for an apartment seems quite high to me: I had a 105sq.m flat in not the cheapest area and I was paying €600. I didn't need such a big flat but it was just what became available when I moved over there. Landlords in places like Spain and Italy are often concerned about reliability of income rather than maximising it as it's so difficult to get rid of dodgy tenants.
Lastly, as someone else has already queried, what are you actually getting for your health insurance? Have you considered self-insuring?0 -
I was going to say that about the flat. It WILL sell. It just won't sell for £200k.
My husband has some distant relatives who live in Puerto Banus (like the OP's relatives). They paid a MILLION for their house . The last valuation was £400k.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
The link below leads you to C.A.B. Spain. They are incredibly helpful to expats and Spaniards alike. I would urge you to join the group. I think you need to contact Myra Azzopardi Swainson who founded the group, and your problem seems to fall into the kind of advice you need.
You will have to join the group to post. Good luck, my heart goes out to you.

P.S. I cannot believe the amount you say you give o the brother! You can get a 1 bed roomed flat for 300 EUROS (not £'s) a month, and many many families exist on 800 Euros for a family of 4, and that includes paying rent or mortgage!!! and as for the BUPA costs!!! they must think Christmas comes to them once a month. I have been treated in Spanish hospitals and the care is fantastic.......... and an interpreter charges about 10 euros an hour! I really feel you need to go over there and put your foot down, they are taking you for a ride even though perhaps they don't mean to.When man sacrifices the Love of POWER for the Power of Love, there will be peace on earth.0
