But you admitted you took it late. If you had gone ahead had sex and perhaps got pregnant then the nhs would be paying for your pregnancy - or abortion.

Most people I would expect buy their own condoms anyway.

Yes someone on 50k could afford a prescription charge I'm sure, but then what about making people start paying for other stuff in that case - part payment for an operation if you went skiing & broke your foot - after all you decided to go skiing.

Where do you draw the line? It's not really in the spirit of the nhs.

I took other precautions for the appropriate time, but no it would not have resulted in an abortion.

Our local high school supplies condoms free. A teacher told me boys go in on a Friday and pick them up and try to out do each other on how many they take, she reckons most probably end up stuffed in a drawer.

People do pay for other stuff, prescriptions and dental work are two definites unless you have a low income and qualify for them free. Eye tests as well I think.

If you had a medical condition that meant you needed a prescription every month but someone else had a contraceptive prescription every month why is one free but not the other. If all medicines were free fair enough but if there is a prescription charge why not for the pill?

Just to say a big thankyou again for all the thoughtful people who have pm'd me.
It has been an emotional time over the last few days but i have made a decision to go through with the abortion.
To all the posters who have advised to wait a few more weeks to re-think and make sure, i don't really want to wait any longer nor let the pregnancy progress any further than it has to.

My husband is a supportive one but i think that he too is going through an emotional time.
I have told a close family member who has supported me a lot and can understand that in my circumstances a baby at this time is not a viable option.
The procedure is booked in for tomorrow morning so no doubt there will be no sleep for me this evening.
This thread has helped me to weigh up the views and options and i'm sure this is the right thing for us at this stage. Hubby will now go back to the doctors and try and fast-track his vasectomy, he is even looking to go private if they can do it any sooner.

It is good that you have some support. I supported a young colleague when she had an abortion. She was frightened to tell her parents and needed someone. I hope you are OK.

    Available on prescription, I believe.

God only knows what that has to do with ensuring people have access to effective and safe contraception and sexual health services though.

Yes it is. Looking back it is because I queried why contraception is free, you said it was cheaper for the NHS so I said what about free five a day and you said that wasn't a medicine or medical procedure. I asked if condoms were a medicine or medical procedure and you said a medical device (I think) so I asked about gluten free bread. Not a medicine, medical procedure or device but provided free (well person I know gets it free I can't swear everyone does) I still don't understand why contraception is free, why no prescription charge? I don't really understand why my friend gets free bread either. It seems really random what you pay for and what you don't. I have an underactive thyroid which means I don't pay for any prescriptions so if I have an infection and need antibiotics or something I get it free but it is nothing to do with my thyroid. I don't even understand why the thyroxine is free let alone things unrelated to my condition. I have a friend with asthma and I don't think that qualifies for free prescriptions but she needs loads of med as she has really severe asthma which is life threatening. Don't you think it is a bit odd?

I still don't know what your comment about refunds was about? I have stated I had free contraception so completely irrelevant.

I have a medical prescription that means I need medication every month, still have to pay, which is why I've currently been without meds for a week

If they charged for the pill I think I'd just have to take my chances with condoms as they cost less than a prescription (tried implant and injection and neither agree with me)

May I suggest you consult the NICE website. Clearly, nobody here will be able to offer you an explanation you are satisfied with!
