BT always made it clear if you were billed monthly, at least two chargeable or inclusive calls had to be made with BT within that month to get Inclusive standard 1571. Otherwise a charge of £1.00(Inc VAT) a month for the BT Answer 1571 standard service would be raised.

Or you were billed every three months, at least six chargeable or inclusive calls must be made with BT within those three months. Otherwise a charge of £3.00(Inc VAT) every three months for the BT Answer 1571 standard service would be raised.

So all you had to do was to make 2 short geographical calls a month.

I guess your not keen to move elsewhere because you have cheap line rental with fibre broadband, and want be able to match this with another supplier.

It must reassure the OP no end that there are so many people on MSE who have never made a mistake, never missed failed to read an email, read every word in every document they are sent.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

Anyone can miss an E-Mail or fail to properly read bills and statements. The forum is full of such people. The difference here is the person who made such a mistake was expecting lots of people to sign a petition to the government about it...

I bought a Groupon deal and failed to read the expiry date. I was annoyed, but at myself not the retailer. Whatever happened to personal responsibility?

No more dishonest than any other price increase? They are permitted to modify their services as they think fit, and, providing they advise customers of upcoming changes (which they did) the onus remains with the customer to opt out.

The alternative, to deprive you of service until you opt in would be more disruptive. No, I don't like it either - but I'm a realist and know the only way to go is to vote with my wallet and go elsewhere. After 40 years, I did. I suggest you do the same.

It wasnt so much a price increase as it was a free service prior to this, a service which I didnt even know I had, and which I cant even remember being notified about, otherwise I would have acted.

As for leaving BT, that would cut my nose of to spite my face as I am on their only worthwhile deal which is BT Basic....where I only pay around £5 a month line rental.

    No.
The option to choose whether you wanted it or not has always been there.
I chose not to avail myself of the service many years ago.
You could either call them and tell them you didn't want it or you could log into your online account and remove the service.

The fact that it, along with caller id was to become a chargeable service, was communicated to me by BT at least 2 months in advance.

Being on BT Basic, I get caller Id free of charge, but afaik, never had 1571.....it seems I may have got it when they started charging for it.

Those terms dont apply to users on BT Basic...afaik

and if the last line of your comment should read "and WONT be able to match this with another supplier"......Then yes, you are perfectly correct....BT wont allow Basic customers to subscribe to their own fibre broadband...so I had to go to the only provider that would....who I believe are owned by BT anyway.

It would be interesting to hear from any other members who are on BT Basic, to see if they were notified of the charge, or if they were even on 1571 before the charge was introduced.............as I said earlier...I dont think I was.

Why don't you just write a letter of complaint to BT, detailing your concerns? They'll probably refund (if they haven't already)any outstanding amount they've charged you and issue an apology.

You certainly won't get anywhere with the petition as, even with BobQ's signature, there are still only five signatures.

I also doubt you'll receive any replies from disgruntled BT customers because they will just have accepted it as just another price increase.
Even the Op had abandoned the thread prior to your bumping it...

This is from the BT site

What do you get with BT Basic?
    1. Pay a low line rental and get a call allowance every three months. You will also get free weekend calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers up to 60 minutes.
    2. Check your bills. If you'd like to know how much you've spent since your last bill, you can use our free Call My Bill service on 0800 44 33 11. When you phone, choose option one, followed by option two, and make sure you have your account number with you.
    3. Bar or restrict certain calls. BT Basic has a free Call Barring option so you can stop certain calls being made from your phone. You can bar various types of calls for example, to international, mobile or Premium Rate numbers (such as chatlines or TV shows).
    4. Stay flexible. There is no minimum contract period for BT Basic. This means you can change from BT Basic to any of our other calling plans and packages at any time.
    5. BT Privacy with Caller Display. Registers you with the Telephone Preference Service which helps stop unwanted sales calls and Includes Caller Display, so you can decide whether or not to answer the call (requires a compatible phone).
It says nothing about 1571 or any other paid for service.

and yes I phoned BT and got all my "stolen" paymenrs refunded......but that didnt make it right.
