    It's a non issue.
Take a look at the number of signatures on the e-petition currently 4.
That indicates the strength of feeling.

I'm also very surprised at the negative response from the members on this thread.
With your signature, the petition now has four supporters and it's been up for over a month-I think that speaks volumes...

If you don't want to pay for 1571 the answer is to opt out and not use it. Or go with another supplier..

What about those people who aren't confident on the phone or the internet,
How many of those kind of people will have 'phone and internet from BT? :)

So much for being especially nice to newbies eh?

More fool me for thinking people on here might actually give a damn about being ripped off by big business.

Free is free. Not free unless you spend some money with us in which case it's chargeable. The word should mean something shouldn't it?

OP I cannot say I agree with all the petition, in particular its nothing like the PPI selling. But I can see its another example of relying on the fact that busy consumers do not always have the time to check their bills.

I will do you the courtesy of posting the link.

Maybe one use of a forum like this is to critique the wording of an e-petition before its generated?

Still just 4 signatures; only 99, 996 more and it'll be considered for debate in the House Of Commons...

And so your point is that you cannot be courteous unless you agree with the petitioner?

I've been perfectly courteous in my every response to this thread…
Everyone who responded in the early stages had clearly found their way to the petition without it being explicitly linked.

At post #18, the Op stated he would remove the petition at the end of January if it didn't get far more signatures. Since that time it has garnered one more supporter and I think the OP will have already accepted it's abject failure...

A service you can choose to use or not. Hardly even remotely similar to the PPI mis-selling debacle.

I certainly didnt get the choice as to whether I wished to pay for it or not.....
I dont usually check my bills, as I dont use the home phone for calls, and only have a line in for fibre broadband. Had I not checked it, I would be paying for something I didnt ask for, dont use, and dont want.
The option to choose whether I want it, came only after I had been charged...........which imho...is unethical.

If it has the same consequences for others, surely it should have been handled differently by BT.............I can't honestly see how you can argue against this.....unless youre trolling.

Its WRONG the way it was introduced.
    Couponing....."every little hurts"

But all the people can't be all right all the time. .........I think Abraham Lincoln said that.

I have opted out....but only after I had been charged, then had to claim my money back for last month.

Ive got my line rental(BT Basic, so cant really change) through BT.....and I was getting conned.....surely if its only a few hundred, few thousand........its NOT right.

I can't honestly see how anyone can support the method in which BT have gone about this..............its dishonest!

No more dishonest than any other price increase? They are permitted to modify their services as they think fit, and, providing they advise customers of upcoming changes (which they did) the onus remains with the customer to opt out.

The alternative, to deprive you of service until you opt in would be more disruptive. No, I don't like it either - but I'm a realist and know the only way to go is to vote with my wallet and go elsewhere. After 40 years, I did. I suggest you do the same.

    No.
The option to choose whether you wanted it or not has always been there.
I chose not to avail myself of the service many years ago.
You could either call them and tell them you didn't want it or you could log into your online account and remove the service.

The fact that it, along with caller id was to become a chargeable service, was communicated to me by BT at least 2 months in advance.
