  • Has it been double marked?

No just once, I am at some point eligible to put my work through as a disabled student because of dyslexia, but I am still waiting for the educational psych appointment so although the university disability team have been great there isn't much they can do yet.

    I didn't get a terrible mark.

I was thinking of emailing the lecturer and the disability advisor. I am finding the university portal quite hard to navigate to find the information I need.

I was more I don't know how to word it not upset but just a little put off by the rudeness of the lecturer in the feedback than anything.

Oh well, I don't want to cause a fuss or anything when the disability bits finally come through I was wondering if they would all be relooked at but no-one has any idea how long it will take. I've got an exam in a few weeks that I know I am going to struggle as well...

  • If you have a learning agreement and the university agrees you need support but haven't put it in place yet ask for an extension.

Your best point of call is have a chat with your lecturer explain that you Dont understand the mark/feedback. Do not instantly challenge the mark.

Your university regulations will give you information on remarking/challenging marks.

Speak to you disability tutor about extensions.

(I work in a university college office and get asked this very thing by our students).

Don't wait and see - the longer you wait the more difficult it will be to get it re-marked. also explain to the tutor that you have a disability and are still waiting the evaluation. but be nice!
Yes, get your psych evaluation ASAP and email the disability advisor. if you have special needs then they should really have been addressed by now.

Is it one that counts toward your degree classification? You can ask for feedback, and you might be able to arrange a meeting with the marker to discuss it.

You probably won't be able to appeal though, at most universities academic judgement is final, only extenuating circumstances are grounds for appeal.

    I agree with this.

I had a final assessment score back last year on a module that was approx 30% lower than my ongoing coursework. I was so annoyed but we do not have right of automatic appeal just because we don't like it.

I stropped for about 3 days telling everyone I was quitting and I hated it :rotfl: I then calmed down and quietly cracked on. My scores vary wildly from 38% - 96% and I don't entirely understand why. Different tutors want different things.

Try speaking to your tutor if the feedback and reasoning for your score isn't clear. :)

    Hi,

This is probably going to sound like I am throwing my dummy out of the pram but I'm sure I'm not.

I've had a piece of work back today and I've been marked down quite a lot on something that I don't think I should of been as it wasn't clear in the assignment brief, I've been through the feedback, the assignment brief, the study handbook and the module handbook today to make sure it's not something I've missed.

I don't want to make a prat of myself asking for it to be relooked at if I can't. I'm not even sure when the university reopens with lecturers!

Did you check all your spelling and grammar before submitting?

ETA: I apologise for making my comment before reading the entire thread and realising you're dyslexic. Have you applied for DSA to help you with this? Are your tutors aware if so? They're not automatically informed. It's up to you to approach each lecturer at start of semester to make them aware of your extra needs.

I hope you can get this sorted. Perhaps opt for a resub if grades are lower than expected?

    Good luck :)

ETA2: Is this your first year? I suspect so and in that case don't panic. The grades you get this year are purely for guidance and won't reflect in your final degree grade.

It will give you valuable food for thought as to where you can improve etc, and yes, you will receive negative criticism where it's due but take it on the chin, it's for your own good. Trust me :D

I did in fact read the assignment requirement carefully and the Module handbook which state about the assignment:

'should be appropriately referenced using ACADEMIC sources of literature (books and journals)' (Module Handbook)

    and

'Your assignment must have at least five (5) academic references from books or journals. Any use of websites (including the reference for your chosen video) is additional to the five required references and all references must use Harvard referencing style as illustrated in your HUBS Study Skills Handbook.' (Assignment Brief)

Within my assignment there is at least 5 references to books or journals using the Harvard referencing style and both books are listed in my reference list.

No where in the brief or module handbook is there a mention of there needing to be five individual academic texts in the reference list specifically, just that they need to be referenced.

Even in the study skills handbook there is no (can't think of the word) clarification between referencing in text and a reference list.

From the feedback I am guessing that the lecturer wanted 5 separate sources in the reference list not 5 references from books or journals in the text.

In one book I used 3 references and 1 books I used 2 references as well as an online journal and some webpages.

It was only a 1000 essay!!

I'm first year so although it doesn't go towards my classification it count towards getting a placement for industrial year.

Speaking with my academic hat on, I would have marked you down. The module handbook seems quite clear to me. You were asked for at least five references and provided just two.

    Sorry.

This is a learning curve, don't let it get to you, now you know for next time!

The marker is right, although a bit abrupt. One 'reference' usually means one source, however many times you cite it in the text. The in text references are called citations.
  • Sorry but as an uni student, I'd read that as 5 individual references, aka 5 different books or papers. Tbh just 2(!?) on an entire essay, even if it is only 1000 words, is really low. On my last 1000 word essay I've got 12 papers in my bibliography, and that's not particularly high.
