We were just given a weblink, told to pick a video from it and write a 1000 word essay on it using the Cornell notes system (which I hated haha and will never use again, it was so complicated!)

Recommended texts should be in the unit description. Do you have this? It should detail what the unit is about, the learning aims and outcomes, how the work is assessed and assessment requirements.

Also something that has been worrying me as I have got some people in the know here!

I've been diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia from the college I was at but the assessment wasn't right for university. I have had the LADS assessment done and the results throw up the need to see the educational psych for further tests. When those all come back with a diagnosis what happens with all the work I have already done, without the extra measures I am entitled to?

As you can tell from my spelling and grammar I am quite possibly going to fail the written exam I have coming up in a few weeks :(

Our students in this kind of situation would be advised that they can ask for MIT certs (extension) until support is in place.

I would doubt that work already done will be affected by the outcome of any assessment. However, you could try to push for extra time in the upcoming exam on the basis of the evidence as it exists now.

    Hi Lucy.

I've signed up just to reply to your post (I can't have an account because my initial one was banned for some reason so I made another which was quickly banned!)

Anyway. I work for a university and I also completed my degree this year. I work directly with the resources mentioned above - reading is my specialism.

I'm quite disappointed to hear that your institution isn't pushing reading in the same way ours is (or your course maybe) - as mentioned above there's normally reading listed in your unit handbook which should provide a starting point. On your library website do you have a reading list section? You should be able to enter your unit number and be provided with some reading. Not all unis have the software yet but it's quite widely used.

The 'reference' in the text is the citation and the longer one with the name, year etc is the reference. A reference list refers to only the sources cited whereas a bibliography is those cited and also other ones consulted.

I had some terrible marks in my first semester for poor referencing - by third year I was scoring 1sts and high 2.1 marks with common positive feedback on referencing, so it's really something to work to understand. One other thing, does your uni have a referencing guide or leaflet? We have a website and I'd be happy to point you to it if you don't have an equivalent.

    Good luck :)

    Just an idea...

When I was at uni I looked up loads of journals online, but because they exist in print too I always referenced them as though I'd looked at the printed journal rather than the website. Might be an idea to do this in future if you don't have the required number of books to reference?

That's fine, but no-one has mentioned citations. I had never even heard the word until today! :( That is the problem then of course that is absolutely fine but if it's something we've not been shown or had mentioned? I understand it is all about individual study now so of course take that on board.

All the study books just mention references as in the text with their examples and then the reference list is just that?

This is what I was worried about. Technically the marker is correct, but if the difference between a reference and a citation has not been explained to you then you may be able to challenge the mark, especially if other students have made the same mistake.

Are you sure that proper referencing techniques haven't been covered? At the start of their first term, our first year students are strongly encouraged to attend a series of lectures covering essential study skills. They are also provided with a general study skills handbook and that covers referencing and citing references in considerable detail.

A journal article online wouldn't count as a web source.

I might be completely misreading your post but hubs implies business school. I work for our business school so if I'm right, feel free to pm me.

None of the text's are related to the topic we had to write the essay on, only on how to write the essay in a sense. Which obviously is related but I'm not sure if I even know what I mean!
I spent hours in the library scouring for books and journals on the topic. The library is 8 floors but only 1 or possibly 2 floors now are open, all of the books are on High Demand so you either can't remove them from the library or can only for 24 hours and cannot renew.

I know it's not relevant to my grade (just a rant really!) but the place is a complete shambles at the moment and 3 out of the 8 of my friendship group have already applied to other universities they are so fed up with how poor it's been this year!

Maybe I am too thick for university and should just quit, seems such a waste of money to just be so disheartened and frustrated but although not the brightest crayon in the box I love learning.

That doesn't sound acceptable! I can recommend a fantastic business school.... Lol!

OP says she referenced two books and a journal so wouldn't that count as three then?

I know it's still not five, but it's more than half!

I had the same issues with getting hold of books, the only sure way to get hold of them was to be happy to spend days sitting in the library! Do you have access to E-books?
