  • You still haven't said whether you've claimed DSA yet? They would pay for all the extra equipment you need, as well as doing an indepth assessment which would be passed onto your university by way of recommendations for printed hard copy of PPs, assignment extensions, extra time in exams, sitting exams in isolation etc, where appropriate.

If you haven't then you need to get onto it pronto. Most students claim during the summer before starting uni so they can have training with using new laptops, dictaphones and software etc, if necessary.

Oh sorry, yes I did apply over the summer on advice from the Uni but the application has been rejected as the assessment isn't right for DSA. So I have to reapply when I have the report.

Sorry to hear that and hope your next application is more successful :)

I made a huge change in our lives to commit to university because I want a degree and it was just overwhelming to feel like I've let everyone and myself down.
Please don't feel like that about it. It's not unusual for students to bollox up referencing and in year 1 it could almost be classed as normal.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Absolutely, there will be plenty of people having to re-submit that essay. If you could do everything perfectly in 1st year a degree wouldn't take three years!
  • Re the concern you have about feedback, sometimes lecturers have a stock phrase or phrases that they use constantly. Was it handwritten or typed? If the latter it is probably almost an autocorrect function by now to indicate that your referencing needs work. I think you're taking it way too seriously. Bear in mind that first year tutors are expected to make sure that all students have a good grasp of referencing by the time they get to second year so they crack down hard on it. That's how they do it.

If you have any concerns, go and talk to the tutor and seek feedback once you've settled down. It's ok to say you were worried about it, it shows that you want to learn and marks you as an enthusiastic student. But it's not a good idea to be dramatic, university is a workplace like any other and people don't appreciate being wept on :)

And whilst the marks count towards placement, you being able to step up and take responsibility for your mistakes (however unwitting) will also indicate that you are a person who will do a good placement.

Keep in mind that this is a professional environment. The onus is now on you to be independent. Be very aware of when you complain that teaching is not up to scratch. You really need to be sure of your ground. To me this is a misunderstanding, it's not a teaching issue, although you could suggest they amend their guidelines to make sure it doesn't happen again.

    Good luck with the study!

Yes, academics teach but we aren't school teachers.
