Because those of us with the old green paper license they are valid till we are age 70 - and nothing to pay ever.
Photo licenses have to be renewed every 10 years - which costs money - so in effect its another tax.
So we will be keeping our old green licences thank you very much0 -

Don't you have to pay for it and Keep on renewing it, unlike the old paper one, what advantage would it give?
uxb yes sorry you posted before I answered, but what appears on-line?0 -
Think this is a great idea tbh.0

Shouldn't that headline read:
"Online driving records will increase car insurance for those who've previously fibbed, but won't have any effect whatsoever on the majority of drivers"?
Forgive my cynicism, but the insurance industry isn't exactly known for its efforts to control its costs or the price it charges the consumer.
Or more accurately that ALL drivers with convictions will now pay the correct premium instead of some of them which will mean Insurers can collect the premiums that reflect the chances of a claim. Which in turn will mean they can reduce the premiums for drivers who have not had any convictions who currently subsidise the premiums of the non disclosing drivers and also the premiums for some of the people with minor convictions may also reduce for the same reason0 -

I didn't realise that, thank you. It's less than 10yrs since I moved therefore my licence was renewed FOC. Are we sent a reminder when it's due for renewal?“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
You have to give them loads of personal information already, so what difference does it make if they get hacked, with or without this new system?
It's pretty much the end of the road for ID cards and passports. In future, all important transactions should be based on DNA.
When you buy a house, you sign by giving your finger prints using your blood as ink. Obviously you need to register your DNA initially. All new borns will have their DNA recorded by law.
Obviously, we can still use PIN numbers and facial recognition, or even iris scan, for less important transation.0 -
The panic / conspiracy merchants are missing quite an important element of this..... It is optional. If you do not wish to disclose your driving licence number then you do not have to when you are buying insurance. The DVLA, the ABI and the MiB have been very clear on what Insurers/Brokers can and cannot do with this data. All of this is publicly available here; https://www.abi.org.uk/Insurance-and-savings/Topics-and-issues/Insurance-industry-access-to-driver-data/Stakeholder-documents
The Business Process guide outlines the instructions that have been issued to the industry, including who can access the data and when. All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.0 -

It will be optional - however an insurer can choose what to do is a driving license number isn't provided - either decline to quote, or load the premium. I suspect most will load the premium to a small degree.0 -
And again, what about the 6% of the population who don't have internet access to check the accuracy of these?
As a "straw poll of one", my car's online record is incorrect. If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?
