When I was on JSA I asked if I could take a voluntary role that was only one day a week but it was relevant to my skills, qualifications and would actually benefit me. I was told no as this would prevent me from job hunting, funnily enough they didn't consider 30 hours a week on placement in a shop would impact on my job hunting at all!

I didn't think they could stop you, as long as you tell them, are not getting paid and still looking and availble for work? doesn't surprise me tho as the advisers seem to either know naff all about the rules or lie or give out the wrong info.

oh so you think working in a charity shop will get me a job do you?:) Everyone knows its slave labour wake up.

Well you haven't found a paying one doing voluntary work?
  • Back in 2012 when I had just started claiming benefits I had to do a two month charity shop placement, I went every single day and tried my best, but because the boss was a total idiot and hated me for some reason (I think she just had a thing against JSA volunteers) she told the job centre that I was 'a bit lazy' even though I was doing their jobs for them whilst they went out having a fag 3-4 times a day, luckily I found a job not long after so I haven't had to volunteer since, but if I ever do go back on job seekers, and was told I had to do a work placement, I most definitely would not choose a charity shop. Ask if there are any other placements - even pound land would probably be a better option

Please choose your clothing carefully. I don't think any of us can cope with another t-shirt thread ;)

Havent got time to read all the replies but when i reminded my advisor that i already did voluntary work he saw my point and scrapped it.

he was incompetent again. They know i do voluntary work but he hadnt noted it down.if he worked in bank he would be out seriously. The manager also covers up for him and they keep it in house.

I dont agree with be ordered to a charity shop. People are ordered their by the courts if they have offended. Why should jobseekers be sent to the same place as someone who is being punished. Wrong.

The court sends people to work in a charity shop? I thought the court sends people to prison.

So you haven't been sent to a mandated placement at all?

Exactly!!! They make the rules to suit themselves!

When I was on the work programme, I expressed an interest in attending college. Fine, they said, but if a training course came up, they told me I would have to leave college to do said training course regardless of it being a mere CV/computer type course.
Now, this college course would actually equip me with the skills to become self-employed. So, they were prepared to take me out off a course that would get me out off the benefits system and place me on a crap 13wk useless course that would KEEP me in the system, as there would be no employment at the end off it?? Sorry, makes no sense to me whatsoever.

I signed off last September and went ahead to do the college course full-time. Anything to escape the endless hoops they make you jump through. I'm enjoying the course, but struggling to survive financially on a bursary. Your damned if you make an effort to change your life.....and classed as a "scrounger" if you claim benefits??

Many people on forums such as these who have a job and think they are safe from unemployment themselves can think again....it's only a matter of time before the government run out off sticks to beat the poor with...and YOU may be next!

It's little things like this that mean your CV doesn't pass go.
