Don't hesitate to let me know if I've made a mistake! What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -

I know exactly that permission thing that goes through your mind to tell you it's ok and you're allowed. It all goes a bit rubbishly wrong for me after that, as if my brain has said 'fill your boots'. It's almost childlike for me, and the adult part of my brain that says why are you bothering? doesn't get a look in. There's no argument, the child part has won before I start.
I think the distraction idea is the best one for me, so the time I would have started passes and then it's too late to drink really.
Changing your target is a good plan I reckon, because if it's more achievable then you get the good feeling that goes with that. Drink does come with a big self-berating thing and achievable targets are a helpful opposite to thatWent to a Dementia Friends talk last night, and whilst the speaker wasn't brilliant she did give one useful snippet that people with dementia may forget your name, the conversation, the trip out for cake, etc., they will remember the emotion (whether it's good or bad) attached to it. That has given me much pause for thought.
That's interesting about dementia. When I looked up about memory and trauma, I read that trauma memories aren't stored in the right place so they can't be recalled. But emotions are stored differently so I remember these, even if I don't remember what happened.
In a dissociated brain, emotions are the opposite, so if I'm feeling very phased-out with something I'm doing or a room I'm in and someone says 'do you remember your cat?' (who I loved to bits) my brain is grounded and I'll remember that, even if afterwards I've forgotten where I was or the room.
Is it that emotions are essential for survival? e.g. fear, happiness, sadness, love, but other functional parts are only necessary for that moment? I'm not sure which way round it is, but it seems both types of memory are definitely stored differently.
I didn't do so well on the alcohol front last night, but I didn't mix my drinks and start on the wine, which is some progress. I can't drink now till Friday, which will be my first 3 AFDs in a row for a while if I can manage it.0 -
Thanks for changing my target Shaggy. I'm calling in early as my chicken is in the oven and it's calling my name. 8/11 please0

That's really interesting, Piggles, isn't the brain an amazingly powerful and convoluted organ!
23/29 AFDs for me today, but I'm confessing to eating two bars of chocolate and two biscuits. What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?0 -
I have had a stressful day and would have loved a drink tonight but am going to abstain. And actually lying on my bed drinking a glass of ginger beer and slowly relaxing is probably doing the trick at about the same pace. Looking forward to the weekend and a break from work though.0
