Roll up, Roll up. A New Month, A New Challenge.SET YOUR30 days up for grabs!
Everyone Welcome!!!What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -
Did everyone see they announced new guidelines for healthy drinking today (which are lower than they used to be)? ... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-35209597 ... Just thought it might interest people!Safe drinking limits 'were simply a guess'
Recommended alcohol intake (and recommended fruit & veg intake) varies a lot around the world and most of the recommendations just aren't based on "real" science. What do we do when we fall? This was very helpful, for me, as I never knew how units were calculated. Makes my strong red wine slightly less appealing.
Me too Dizzy Imp! I can restrict myself (if I try) to one glass of red a night but suspect that the red I like is so strong it's probably 3-4 units per glass, ie still too much!
I did wonder if the new guidelines were linked in any way to a BBC programme last year by those twin doctors who did an experiment - one binge drank 21 units every Saturday but didn't drink in between and the other drank 21 units over the course of the week, then they got themselves medically tested to see how their livers etc were coping. The results were so bad for both that I think there was some suggestion that there was a need for new guidelines. I don't know if there is a connection though.0 -
To be honest, you might be a bit shocked at how little real science is behind the government guidelines on alcohol (and other things, like 5 A Day).

hi shaggydoo - I had read that and it is quite scary!0 -
2/31 AFDs for me today. Hope everyone's feeling strong-willed.What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?0

There is absolutely no medical evidence to support the unit advice the Government provides. I drink everyday simply because I like it and have no plans to change. However its only wine I could understand a bottle of Vodka a day may damage your health but certainly the odd bottle of wine a day will not harm you!
There are too many "Do gooders" in this country who should mind their own business!0 -

There is plenty of evidence that drinking regularly is bad for the health.0 -
Well said satchmo. I suppose what a plonker is an apt comment for this thread!:rotfl:
I'm afraid that putting calories on wine wouldn't help me as compared with the calories in a chocolate bar there's no contest which I'd choose:o.
I must admit I don't take a great deal of notice of these health warnings whether it's for sugar or bacon or any of the other things that are supposedly suddenly bad for us. I think we all know that in a balanced healthy diet nothing needs to be completely banned but that while some foods (and drinks) can be included freely others need to be kept at treat status.0
