Thank you for your kind words Wanna Bee Free. Without everyone's support here I honestly don't think I could have done it, so the appreciation is mutual.

As to 'on the wagon' there are several different versions of this but they all contain the same elements. Apparently in the days of public hangings the cart holding the prisoner was driven through the streets of London towards Tyburn for the hanging, all of which the public found hugely entertaining. Some versions say that the condemned man was allowed into the pub for a final drink (often the Cittee of Yorke pub is mentioned on High Holborn) other say that they weren't allowed a final drink because they were 'on the wagon.' In the version where they were allowed a final drink, there were those that chose not to have one, and they were said to be 'on the wagon.' If they'd had a drink, once they were 'back on the wagon' their drinking days were over in a particularly final way.

Congratulations on meeting your target Chardonnay! I'm very impressed at how many people met their targets in December, and full of admiration.

OH has decided he's going to have two consecutive nights a week AF in 2015 to give his liver a bit of a rest and has designated Monday and Tuesday as those nights. I kind of feel for him because he didn't manage it last night, but as he is away for new year celebrating it with his oldest friend and then it's his birthday on 6 January I don't think he should try to start the new regime until after those events. It's a huge change for him and I don't believe in new year's resolutions anyway.

I'll have my usual for January, please Shaggy.;)

It's all too easy to think of 'excuses' for not being AF wbf. I think we've all succumbed to the celebrating/drowning sorrows or the sunny day in pub garden/miserable weather so cheer myself up or the hard day/good day ......... and so it goes on. What's good about the thread is that whatever our aspirations everyone on here is biting the bullet in some form or another.

Loving the 'on the wagon' story HB. I agree your DH should start with baby steps. IMO, it's much easier to achieve something however small and then build on it than set a big target and perhaps fail in a 's*d it' moment but we're all different.:)

I managed another unexpectedly tonight. If I'd had a drink it would have been because I could so decided not to bother. I wish I'd been equally abstemious with the chocolates though.:o

11 AFDs for December please Shaggy.
  • I would like to set a target of 18 days please
The support on this board is fantastic so I hope by joining in I will reach my target, which looks modest but it will be good if I reach it.

First AF day not till Sunday so I wish everyone Happy New Year and hope those who are aiming for a dry January get off to a good start.

Thank you Shaggydoo for all the work you put into this thread. X

  • delighted to post 21/21 which is brilliant for me and may be even more than 21 but sort of lost track of days/dates over the festivities.

Can I sign up for 31 for January please? .

Thank you Shaggydoo for keeping me on track and recording the scores on the doors and well done to all my other fellow AFDers in their quest, good to know that I'm in such good company.

In the words of Simone Crowell in the Y Factor, I am giving this one million percent..............

Have a good Hogmanay when it comes and here's to a brilliant 2015

  • Hello! :j

I'm a newbie on here - I am guilty of using the drink (and food) as emotional crutches, but am very aware that my one drink one day a week has become 7 days a week, and then sometimes more than one (or just bigger drinks), so I need to get this under control before it begins controlling me.

Can I have 31 days for January please - a good dry out, and a break of the habit should help, though it's not going to be easy!

Many thanks & Happy New Year to you all

    LB xx

    Hi there LavenderBees!

    31/31 please, Shaggy.

For anyone planning to go AF in January, may I suggest you weigh yourself first thing tomorrow morning? I realised today that I've lots 4kg since I knocked the drinking on the head, which is half a stone. Painlessly and without trying. (Probably indicates how much I was drinking.)

I can't think there will be many that will be keeping AF tonight, so for those that imbibe: May your celebrations be joyful, your friends and family kind, and your hangover painless.

Happy new year, everyone. You're a great bunch.
