The Giving Up/ Cutting Down alcohol support thread - number 13

I have done 'dry' January and what a revelation its been. .... I don't think I will go back to where I was before, not saying I will never drink but hopefully not at the levels I was. Good luck to everyone, in my late fifties this is the first time I have been so long without booze. Who knew?
So glad you found out what it was that gave you the impetus to drink, Gran 3, and that you made it through Dry January. Congratulations.
Huge congratulations to everyone who made it through Dry January!
31/31 please, Shaggy.Better is good enough.0 -
Might as well declare the 29/30 for last night and the 30/30 for tonight. Wish I hadn't drank on the 1st now.
That's me also went longer than I have for years without alcohol. I wasn't doing Dry January, the time had came to stop and it was as good a time as any.
I drank every night I could without fail, which meant I only didn't drink if I was nightshift.
So whats been the benefits of not drinking?
I'm happier within myself (not that I was sad or depressed) with more motivation and energy to do things I'd normally have put off until they were needing done. I never suffered from traditional hangovers, just a lack of get up and go.
I don't wake up in the morning with back pains any more, and I seem to be sleeping better.
Chronic heartburn/acid reflux has all but gone, as has wakening up in the middle of the night and having to get out of bed due to cramp in my leg.
I've lost 10lbs in weight with very little change to my diet, and have saved £300 by not buying alcohol.
The first few nights I'd sit with a glass of fizzy water, but the urge to make me feel like I was enjoying a drink has passed too.
So all in all, well chuffed
Shaggy, might as well declare for the yearly challenge, 30/364 please.
Well done to everyone who's reached their targets, or have even went a single night not drinking when they would normally default to opening a bottle.0 -
I'm calling in early for tonight at target 30/30. My "Dry January" runs until Thursday as I started on 2nd Jan, but I will make it, that's for sure.
I will be honest and say I have found it really difficult at times (mainly Fridays, some Saturdays) but I got through it as I was determined I could beat it. I did have a period when I was sleeping better but have gone back to difficulty sleeping again this week, maybe due to lots of things going through my head for work.
Well done to everyone who completes their challenge tonight :TWhat goes around comes around.....I hope!0 -
Who'd have thought there could be so much joy around in January! The thread has a really happy buzz to it today. Great!! I'm delighted for you all, whatever you've achieved.:T
No drinking for me today.

Congratulations to everyone on the dry January challenge. It's a real inspiration to me to tackle my own drinking. I'm going to re-read the entries when I got my own cravings.'...it is only kindness that makes sense anymore ' Naomi Shihab Nye0

Just wanted to add my congratulations to those who completed the Dry January thing - I managed it last year but didn't think I could this year due to 'stuff'.
