I used to buy a lot of charity shop clothes when I was younger, but haven't for years now. Although I have nothing at all against them, I just don't have the time/motivation to go looking through all the c.shops in my town for, say, a pair of work trousers, when I know I can just go into M&S and get exactly what I want, quickly and simply.

That being said, when I want some new books to read, I do sometimes go round the charity shops for a look what they've got.

  • I'm quite funny about library/second hand books.

    If they're new, I'm ok.

If they're all battered then I won't touch them!

Its funny, a friend wouldn't let her children use the local library for the same reasons (we're going back a bit now). They're lovely kids, but not the brightest - in fact barely literate. I hate the thought of germs but could easily send hours reading in a library if I had the time.

I wash my hands every time I enter the house, and I never skimp on liquid hand wash. I refuse to use bars of soap as I think they are disgusting.

I was watching extreme cheapskates last night and I could only stomach watching for 5 minutes. Sharing shampoo for your partner's head is bad enough but sharing a toothbrush and dental floss... Just no!!

    This is a great thread!

I cook mostly from scratch, although I do buy frozen pizzas and oven chips.

I cook huge pans of chilli and Bolognese sauce, both bulked out with red lentils and chopped mushrooms and peppers, which I then freeze in individual portions,so I only have to cook rice or pasta to go with them.I find this convenient as I live on my own.

I have a breadmaker which I use frequently and I also bake cakes and scones.I have a microwave, but I don't use it much, mainly for making sauces.I have never had a slow cooker.I do use a Remoska, which I find very useful, saves putting the big oven on.

I only buy Fairy liquid and Hellman's mayonnaise and there are only 2 brands of instant coffee I will drink,Kenco Brazilian and Nescaf! Alta Rica, all of which I stock up on when they are on offer.I am quite happy to drink basic tea bags however.

I make a lot of home made soups, although I don't make my own stock,I use Marigold powder.I always use leftovers and I am quite happy to eat the same meal or soup 3 days in a row.I don't take any notice of use by/sell by dates. If it smells and tastes ok,then I eat it!

I draw the line at wee cloths and mooncups, although I don't need the latter now, thank goodness.I do like a decent,3 ply loo roll.I use disposable wipes to clean the loo.

I don't drive,so I am used to walking and using buses,my bus pass comes in handy!

I used to sew and knit years ago,I made a lot of my own clothes in my teens and 20's and I also made some of my children's clothes when they were little, but now I can't be bothered lol.

I will put extra layers of clothes on or sit in a onesie rather than put the heating on too much,I grew up in a draughty old farm house so I can put up with a bit of cold.

    Not so MS...

I do buy a coffee a couple of times a week when I am out shopping,in either Caf! Nero or Costa and I have lunch out once a month, but I think this can be balanced out by other economies that I make.Oh and I can't live without my internet/computer,I would rather give up my TV,which I watch very little anyway.

Oh Bars of soap don't annoy me at all. I mean after all, what did we all do before liquid soap was invented?? Didn't and still hasn't done any of us any harm so far in life so I doubt it will now lol.
My granny refused to use any other soap but a bar of soap, and she died when she was 99 years old. So I'll carry on using them for the meantime.
She always said when these new things came out, my God I'd love to know how you all coped when you were on rations or there was no such thing as.........
And she was right. People coped without manys a thing before they were invented, it's just out of pure laziness that we don't change back to our old ways these days. But I'll be making a lot of changes and going back to a lot of old ways of things.

What an interesting thread! Made me think about what I do and don't do.

I cook from scratch most of the time, padding out meat dishes with veggies etc.
    I cook soup. ;)
I buy locally when at all possible. All our meat comes from the local butcher OR farmers' market.
We recycle as our local council provides us with a massive wheelie bin.
I mend clothes/sew on buttons etc.
    I bake cakes.
I use bars of soap (if that's seen as OS).

    However:
I used to knit but haven't had any time recently.
    I swap books with a friend/work colleagues.
My slow cooker is gathering dust. :o
I don't use a mooncup. A step too far for me, I'm afraid (but I respect those people who do).
We use disposable wipes for cleaning the loo.

I'm the same. Almost the first thing I do when I get in from work, after hanging up my coat and bag, is to wash my hands. I'm the same after being anywhere out of the house for any length of time, shopping, going to the post office. My hands just feel gross.

When I'm at work, I'm absolutely militant about washing my hands before lunch. I didn't used to be, but I definitely seem to get fewer coughs and colds since I started being really militant about it.

One work place, a few years back, only had bars of soap in the toilets. I refused to touch them, and used my own hand sanitizer.

I have both bars and liquid soap at home - though the liquid soap is value baby bath, far cheaper and soap is soap. I don't go in for all the antibacterial soaps etc. (i have a bottle of antibac spray for when people get tummy upsets / norovirus.)

But when I went to Glastonbury we were all falling on any tiny slivver of soap we came across. I hadn't thought about it before I went so only had some at the tent and it wasn't easily transportable. This year i will have a small bottle of liquid soap with me at all times - the sanitising gel just isn't the same.
I wanna be in the room where it happens
