Serious question for a minute, though. Presumably the properties are freehold rather than leasehold?0

Thanks Jim , i was wondering , if i replace the two panels myself , can i then paint them rainbow coloured , drill random holes in them , hang barbed wire on them and then phone the police , reporting myself for criminal damage?

Yes Jim , freeholdNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0 -
Its strange your neighbours invited you in for a cup of tea when it first happened. I'm wondering if there are actually 2 sides to the story. Perhaps the neighbours did interpret what happened differently from how you meant. This is all pretty silly and has the potential to make you even more miserable in the long run. Whatever the deeds say the boundary is between both houses so really why should only pay for it. Why not try working together? Even if you hate them- just make life easier for both of you. And of course be mindful that any escalation could have you both stuck in your houses as you can't sell them. Go next door or invite them round and sit down and work out how to resolve them eg both maintain the boundary. You might find that actually they are worried about the costs.
I know that sounds harsh but when we first moved I could easily have really fallen out with my neighbours. But I held my tongue and worked round a few things which annoyed me but not them. We get on great now. Can't even think why I was ever annoyed with them. ( and a fence panel was one of the annoying things!)weight loss target 23lbs/49lb0 -
Even if you built your own fence (assuming you wanted to) you'd have to pay for the upkeep anyway.
I go with the putting the fence panels in with your neighbour's agreement. That way, if you have inadvertently annoyed them, you look like you're making amends. Plus, it only costs you £40."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -

AFAIK the law does not require you to fence your property unless you have animals that require keeping within it. Additionally, if you do fence your property it expects you to fence it to its fullest extent or you risk losing any property outside the boundary.
If you want a fence, you can put a fence up - it does not however force you to maintain in any further than ensuring that it is safe. If it blows down you are not required to put it back up, merely make it safe.
If you put up a fence inside this other fence then the boundary is still the fractional line between them, however the neighbor can then take their fence down and claim any gap after a suitable period.
If you put up a new fence on your property then they cannot hang anything from, paint, stain or otherwise do anything else to your fence without your permission, it is your property. You can paint or stain it as you wish however if offensive comments (racism/antisemitism etc) are on it you could be in breach of some laws.
However, for a peaceful existence it could be beneficial to come to some agreement with the neighbor.
Perhaps split the costs.0 -
The deeds specify a fence to be maintained but as i have mentioned 76534 times i dont expect to be able to enforce it and on that subject who is going to `make `me put a fence up on their boundary, the Police......?
So is it the same fence that was first put up when the house was built? Do your deeds go into to detail about the construction of the fence?
The local authority will make you erect a fence if you have animals.0
