hijackthis looks very similar to the last one, see the list of things suggested before - google update task, nokia driver, justcloud, flashplayer update, mbam, apple/bonjour, chrome etc etc

garmin, taking the tick out of startup, still leaves the software, you can still run it, it just won't be running every boot automatically. Don't see the point of running it at startup unless you connect your satnav every day. The garmin update service doesn't need to be running all the time either, can be disabled with msconfig/services or set to run manually using services.msc and run as required.

you should say dont show this message again after msconfig reboots to stop the selective startup message

netgear, you can let windows manage the wireless instead, if you're letting netgear manage the password

Take a look at Vibox (Google them) They sell really good computers at a low price. They have their own website and are also on Ebay. Have been established for many years. Would recommend.

a lot of perfectly usable machines are being thrown away due to misinformation like this.

Even if that was true, and the case, ram is cheap. xp, service packed, with avast uses under 150MB, and any machine bought in the last 15 years is capable of booting in 35 seconds

I'd go back to the doctor. Those drugs are definitely not working.

Oh! I have the 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo of that machine. It's my main desktop. Had it for ages. Upgraded the Memory to 8Gig and put in an SSD. It runs everything I need. Win 7, Office 2010, HD Video, Photoshop CS5, Lightroom is a little slow, but still usable.

I never thought about how much the value has dropped!

Wow - the machine came out in 2006. So it's over 7 years old, but still does everything I want it to.

If you wanted you could breathe a little extra life into it by upgrading its CPU - it's quite easy.

So I can go up to an E6700 in there? I think I need to stick with the 1066MHz FSB speed to match with the 533Mhz RAM in there?
  • Oops, I'm in the s*** now!

I must have ticked or unticked something in the start menu of msconfig, and now, when I boot up, I get so far as ticking on the user (XP), but the pc then hangs. No icons appear.

How can I get back to msconfig please .......

  • Thank heavens, it came back after over an hour! Done a restore point so back in business. It is now working a lot faster, and I think the wife will go bonkers if I do any more damage.

So, thanks, just PMing re possible upgrade of systems, so will stop the changes now.

Thanks to all who have helped, esp Nifty and Closed.
