    About lentils -
I've just found last week's receipt. I thought the lentils were something like £2.79 but they actually were only £ 1.09 for 500g (Tesco). Even better!

Putting in my tuppence worth have you looked on the "Asian" aisle.I have not looked in a bit but I am sure it's cheaper for lentils ect.

Shewhocannotcook makes a good point, I have often found that the 'ethnic' food sections have the same goods at much cheaper price than when they are in the general food aisles, in particular coconut milk 1.99 with the thai foods and then just 99p in the Jamaican food section. Also, noodles, chickpeas, kidney beans.
