Employer questioning my toilet habits

  • Employers can only get away with this nonsense due to there being a shortage of jobs. Once the pendulum has swung the other way (and it will) then they had better change their ways.

    The law of discrimination.

It's not the law that we all must be treated equally!

You can surely understand that a manager has different conversations with different staff members depending on their performance (or how the manager perceives their performance...)

Managers have to speak to people about sensitive topics, I've had to approach people to discuss an issue with their body odour before which was definitely as embarrassing for me as it was for them  Having that conversation is not "discrimination", it's something that needs to be dealt with!

Whether you're actually going to the toilet an excessive amount or not, your manager has noticed you in there a few times and wanted to ask you about it. Maybe it was their blunt way of asking if you were sick/pregnant/ok? I think you should just forget about it and get on with your life... While clearly you should go when you need the loo, maybe try and make sure you go just before you start your shift. They'll soon forget about it.

    It's retail.

I work 10 hours a week but on that particular shift I was working five hours. I went to the loo just before my shift and once again in the middle of my shift.

I am not entitled to any breaks on that shift.

Surely that's once rather than twice or were you late starting your shift because you were in the loo?

Correct. I went once during my shift. Not unreasonable and not unusual for any member of staff hence my indignation that I have been questioned about it from both sets of managers.

Not the stage yet to raise any grievance, but I'd certainly start keeping a discreet record of the dates and timing of your visits and similarly for any snarky comments.

I had a flippant thought about perhaps asking them if them had any alternatives? "Would you like me to wear a nappy?" but perhaps that wouldn't be helpful.:-)

Erm, coming from a completely different angle, but I think under the working time directive you are entitled to a break if your shift is more than 4 hrs? Isn't that why all supermarket checkout operators have 3 and 3 quarter hour shifts??

The crux of the problem was an employment issue, the focus then shifted somewhat.

If individuals require a support group for feminine hygiene issues, perhaps they should form one rather than discuss it here.
