I can when I know it works for me. Check balance for free before and after text to be sure if you're concerned.

I checked the T&C and in fact they don't say anything about 'chargeable' now. Neither they do about 90 days:
You must make a connection action at least once every 180 days. If you do not your SIM will be disconnected from the network and you will not be able to use the service at all. You will lose your mobile phone number. Any credit on your account
at the time of such disconnection will be forfeited.
Updated in 2010 though, but I don't see anything fresher: http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/terms-and-conditions/terms/. I wouldn't be surprised if they failed to update the information on the website. EE = mess.

Well from experience I can tell you that T-Mobile PAYG cut you off after 90 days and any credit disappears, and when you eventually get through to customer services, they'll tell you "It's now 90 days Sir, you will have been informed". Obviously they didn't. Argue for half an hour and you get it put back on - I found. I kept an old phone on an old tariff, which I made their obligatory 'connection action' every 180 days but it was then I discovered I had no service.

Pay as you go sim cards require you to make qualifying calls, not texts, hence my blind Grandma having her sim card cancelled every 6 months under both O2 and Orange as she was only texting.

I think "chargeable event" NOT 'qualifying call' is what you mean.

I have a Three PAYG sim on my desk that's used for incoming calls *only* (some family get 'free' three to three calls)
It has never had any credit on it since I was given it by three about 3/4 years ago

    :)

What are the "chargeable events" for your sim then?
I think you are just lucky (like I am with my Tesco sim).

I was thinking about this, and I wonder if worrying about getting cut off for not using the phone is actually focusing on the wrong problem - I assume that the OP's dad is elderly and not very used to mobile phones? If he puts a sim in the phone and puts it away in a drawer, if an emergency happens the battery might be dead, the sim might have been cancelled, he might just have forgotten how to turn it on. It might be a better idea to try to encourage him to use the phone regularly - show him how to check the weather forecast every day, send him a text every week and get him to reply. Otherwise the phone won't be any use at the time when it is needed.

Erm .... I'm not sure really.
I do call it *very* occasionally from my Orange phone, but mainly the incoming calls are from 'free' 3-3 calls, so maybe the 'system' cant tell the difference between a free call and a real chargeable one???

Even calls from Orange are not 'chargeable' as you don't get charged for them.
My theory is that in fact there is no any real 'system' in place and networks don't rush with enforcing the T&C as they still make some money from incoming cross-networks calls.
