I *think* that most PAYG's need a 'chargeable *event*' and thus an incoming call will do.

You are not charged for incoming calls, so normally it will not - as I said above.

I believe that where the conditions require a 'chargeable event' it means that it should depreciate your balance or come out of some bundle you have purchased. Thus an outgoing call or text would qualify. As an incoming call in the UK wouldn't cost you anything, I don't believe this would qualify.

Some providers simply require an action, incoming or outgoing, to keep the card alive. They do vary from company to company so it's worth reading the small print.

IMO, by far the safest way is to make a minimum length call or send a text every three or six months depending on the time period they specify. A few pence every three or six months is good insurance to keep the balance and more importantly in many cases to keep the number.

I'm with Vodafone & make very few calls. I do send occasional texts however & my sim card has been active more more years than I can recall.

I can top up £5 at a time, which I like & every now & again Vodafone text me with special offers, such as top up with £10 & get £15 credit. I tend to take advantage of these offers to top up.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

My Grandma has a giffgaff sim, the only reason we got that is because us calling her phone every know and again will prevent the sim being cancelled. Being that she is blind, it is an emergency phone that will text certain numbers in an emergency, so its the only network we can put her on without constantly replacing her sim card.

Cheaper to send a single text every 90 days, to another mobile preferably your own to keep track of the dates

Pay as you go sim cards require you to make qualifying calls, not texts, hence my blind Grandma having her sim card cancelled every 6 months under both O2 and Orange as she was only texting.

Works for me on T-Mobile, I pay for texts. Used to be 180 days but they changed it to 90.

I don't remember what Tmobile's T&C say about calls/texts, but you can't rely just on your experience.
I have a 3 y.o. active Tesco sim that has never been topped up and was used for very few incoming calls only. I would have never done this if I valued the number ported to this sim.
