For my Dad. Will hardly ever be used so I just one that I can top-up when needs be, lasts a few months without being cancelled.
i.e. rather than having to top up every month. Had a look at giffgaff but I think this needs to be topped up every month?

have a look at 3's 321 payg sim0

Or Ovivo Freedom.
Giffgaff doesn't need to be topped up every month. No PAYG sim does.0 -

Giffgaff website is all a bit vague about things like airtime. i.e how long a top up lasts for?0
-
It lasts until you use it all.

You can use it on buying 'goodybags' that last one month, but you don't have to.
And, no, giffgaff isn't good for occasional calls/texts.0 -
As above, Three-321 is the obvious PAYG choice subject to coverage (and the handset must be a 3G one).
With Ovivo, you'll have no ongoing costs at all, but there will be the intial £20 investment in the SIM.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Doesnt say how long until it expires if not used.
Why no good for occasional use?0 -
Most (or nearly all) PAYG sims have to be used every 3 months or so otherwise the credit and number is lost.
GG is feasible for occasionally use, but it has one of the most expensive virtual network PAYG tariffs.
Three is the cheapest by far.
But if you can't get a good signal for Three, consider White Mobile.
Or else Ovivio (free indefinitely) but up front charge of £20
If you just want calls also consider Toggle Mobile (3p per minute, but Texts and data are not competitive). Can be cheap when using abroad - see website for details.0 -
;64234815]Doesnt say how long until it expires if not used.
It doesn't expire at all. The sim can get disconnected and the credit lost if not used for 6 month, but this is the case for all PAYG. For some networks it's even shorter than 6 months. However, AFAIK Giffgaff is the only network where incoming calls count for keeping sim alive.
Because calls and texts are cheaper in other places, e.g. at '3'. Giffgaff is good mainly for mobile data - and only if you buy 'goodybags'.Why no good for occasional use?
6 months for most in fact, with very few exceptions. Most (or nearly all) PAYG sims have to be used every 3 months or so otherwise the credit and number is lost.
IIRC, Toggle can be expensive to call to from other UK networks (don't take my word for this). If you just want calls also consider Toggle Mobile (3p per minute, but Texts and data are not competitive). Can be cheap when using abroad - see website for details.0 -
A tip I saw, after a month or so, call your home landline phone, aswer, and hang up. 1 chargeable callWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0
