Here's another email provider's take on how to set SMTP authentication in Windows Live Mail:

Don't think so.......
Oh it is.
I'm sure you do it with the best intentions but you really shouldn't be poking about in someone else's PC if you can't set up email without all this.
I've just downloaded Windows Live Mail onto a Windows machine I have for development stuff and got it up and running with my btinternet email address in under two minutes.
In Live Mail I selected Options > Accounts then clicked on Add account. I only had to input three bits off information.
It asked me for my email address - xxxxx@btinterent.com
It asked me for may password - xxxxxxxx
It asked how I wanted to be known/displayed - Mr Toad
That was all that was required.
Live mail automatically set up the incoming and outgoing server settings. I can send and receive emails to and from my btinternet email account using Windows Live MailOne by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

Do you use classic shell in Win 8 though ?0 -
Step away from the keyboard.
Bt will have its own webmail. Just use that.0 -
On a lighter note, earlier today I set up Thunderbird on a laptop for someone, using imap.
Done it loads of times, but first time using 1&1 details.
It would connect but no emails appeared in the 'in box'.
After about half an hour checking everything, went upstairs to the office pc to double check the Outlook settings.
I'd already noted it was set up as POP3, after a bit of poking around I discovered it was set to 'download and delete from server'.
Hence no emails to download, unticked box, sent test email and all ok.
Sorry for hijack.
:) Move along, nothing to see.0 -

Restored development PC to vanilla Win 8 build from disk image.
Installed Classic shell, I now have a start button that looks like a petrol station ad.
Downloaded Live Mail, answered the three questions as per previous post and it still works. :cool:One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0
