To go back to the original question (or one of them), OP no you do not need a Microsoft account to use Live Mail. It's a desktop program, not a browser based email system. You will however still neeed to log into the desktop if the user account requires it.
If the only problem you had with Thunderbird was setting up the server names, then all you needed to do was post the name of the ISP and someone would have supplied them for you.
The process for Live Mail will be broadly similar. No free lunch, and no free laptop

I tried the standard settings
Incoming Mail (POP3) Server - mail.btinternet.com
Port (usually specified in 'Advanced settings') - 110
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - mail.btinternet.com
Port (usually specified in 'Advanced Settings') - 25
Account Name/Login Name - Your email address (including the "@btinternet.com" or "@btopenworld.com" part)
Password - Your BT Yahoo! password
But this failed to SEND !0 -

That's because it is.
Authentication is turned off...... (I tried P/W transmitted insecurely as well - same result)
Could this be being blocked by AVG I wonder ?
I have found a similar problem at https://community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/Thunderbird-setting-up-problem/td-p/107417
But ours is on-going
It only has a single account
and I tried several Thunderbird installs/uninstalls - they were all the same0 -
No, authentication is turned off because you haven't turned it on. It's nothing to do with any other software, it's to do with how you have set up the mail. You can install and uninstall until the cows come home. If you don't set it up right, it won't work.
Go into thunderbird (or whatever mail client you are using), and make sure for sending that it is switched on - i.e you are using the email address and password when sending, not just when receiving.
Here's how another company explain it:
http://www.gn.apc.org/support/how-enable-smtp-authentication-mozilla-thunderbird-mail-mac-windows
(although for step 3, it's btinternet, not gn.apc.org, and for step 5, use the same username as for inbound)1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?0 -

I will give that a try - thanks
But why does my Thunderbird set-up not need Authentication set ON ?
I am not with BTinternet - but mine is set to OFF and I can send without any problems0 -

I cant see any reason why this wouldn't work ?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Most spamming activity originates from users of unauthenticated email. By removing the ability to send emails without authentication, spam should be significantly reduced.
Setting up an email program and enabling SMTP authentication is easy. You usually switch it on by ticking a box called "My server requires authentication" in your email program's settings.
If you don't set up SMTP authentication, you'll get an error 530 failure message when trying to send email messages.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

It will work, but that requires someone to follow instructions.1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
