Hey Lilt - thank you for that. I will check with HR tomorrow I think. I was going to ring the tax office and see what I could do about being a nomad in that respect. I will have no income passed my last payday which is the 31st October and I fly out on the 4th November - there is no income elsewhere from the land or otherwise.

Regarding work I have no health care, pension is cancelled etc and I don't think there are other hidden costs although I get "London weighting" - have you heard of that... and shift disturbance allowance....

I have applied for 2 shifts of OT. If I don't get them then it's a sign - but i would like to apply for another 2 at least - and you are right. Whats another month in the grand scheme of things. I just can't wait to tell this place I am never coming back.

Can I get my P45 if I am not technically resigning?

    Hey Kat,

A couple of sites I found from a quick google:
    http://www.workingdownunder.co.uk/index.php
    http://www.seek.com.au/
    http://jobs.theguardian.com/st/jobs-australia.html

I saw a thread (no idea what site it was) that said that the worst that you can do is get some contacts out there. Though you should check out what the CVs and Cover Letters are like out there.

Liltykins is very right (at least all of the parts of her post that I understood- I'm sure the rest is correct too) you have done amazingly and no one can ever suggest otherwise!

Well, I have heard of London weighting, but not the shift disturbance allowance. In all reality, these things are just an increase to your salary, surely? They are taxed the same as the rest of your salary?

As for the last part, are you going to submit to their methods and go on sabbatical then? Speak with HR. If you are not in fact resigning or leaving your position, there must be something that can be produced to show this. May be worth giving HMRC a call if you can't get a satisfactory answer.

Peaty thank you for those links. I will check them out today!

Lilt I was gonna give HMRC a call and see what I can do about the lack of address on the form itself. But yes London Weighting and Shift Disturbance Allowance increase my salary and are taxed accordingly... Thanks for clarification on the form though - gonna get on to that asap.

I feel guilty turning around and resigning since I have changed so much about my sabbatical and created so much work for my line manager..:rotfl:I will see what can be done about the P85 first and if it needs me to resign ( although I doubt they would ) then I will consider it.

Payslips should be in today or tomorrow. Getting a little excited. Fingers crossed it hits what I am expecting. Can't be dealing with a "miss" this month...

I think in terms of the london weighting etc, you just have to declare it as part of your salary, get tax back just the same. Fingers crossed on the form.

I see what you're saying about it... but seriously?! Screw them! Lol.

Yay for payslips! I haven't got mine yet, but I have the money in the bank. Was funny watching it zip in, then out into all my other accounts via standing order set up ready for August!

I'm off to work out how much money I lose/save now that Jellytot is starting a new nursery in Sept. (this on my 'lie in') xx

    Payslips are out! :T:T:T:T

£15.18 more than I was expecting! £195 to the CC though which includes last nights "trip" to the supermarket. That should last a while though and into next month.

However I decided to call the tax office and clarify things around the P85. My allowance is £10,000 which they calculate as £833 per month. He couldn't tell me whether this was on my GROSS income or my NET pay so I have calculated it on my net pay - which I think is wrong. But here goes..

From April, May, June and July I have paid £1938.40 in tax. Taking £833 from each of my net payments I get the total of £7097.96 / 20% of this is tax which is £1419.59.

This means I might only get £518 back - which is not as much as I thought (hoped) it would be.

I calculated it as my total earned amount is £10429.96 with £429.96 over my allowance - and they would consider the percentage that 429.96 (20%) acrues (£86) and deduct that from the total tax already paid and then refund the rest of the tax which would be more like £1852.40.

I can see my error however. That £833 tax free monthly allowance is based per month for 12 months. I will only be working for 7 months of this year so that £833 is actually £1428 ( £10K divided by 7 )... back to the drawing board.....

Just found this - http://www.taxundo.com/Calculator.html States at least £1852.40 tax return..? Which is inline with my own calculations. :T:T:T

    Yay for the calculator!

You are right, you were wrong (:rotfl: what a sentence), it is based on gross pay. 'Taxable income' is everything BEFORE tax so it should defo have been more than your original calculation!

Loving the return you've got coming. Did they clarify what you need to do re P45 and your address in future?!
