  • Mooloo - have you considered advertising classes on groupon or living social. If you advertised sewing classes for jan to march it may make people book for Xmas presents. The more students the more cost effective?

Are you going to close between Christmas and New Year and have a proper break ?

I have no idea how to do that one.
    I will look into it.
I don't have many spaces though. Only really room for 6 most of the time. I could do more when doing the smaller craft work, like the decorations etc, but when dress making they need to have the space, at least for the pattern cutting etc!. Unless we stagger the lessons at that time.

But I won't say no to it. I will look into it.

I am closing at 5pm on Monday 22nd until the following Monday. I was going to open the Monday - Wednesday, but the school club is not open on the Wednesday I found out yesterday, so I will only have the Monday and the Tuesday. Its a bit of a cost exercise really. Will I have enough work through the doors, to cover the cost of the child care, the shop staff, and the over heads? or will I be better off shutting the shop and having a full holiday.?
If I shut the shop, I need to still pay the £1,000 overheads for the month. So unless I have a good week this week, then I am not sure I have enough in the bank to cover the rent at the moment.
    EEK.
Although there is £400 worth of work waiting to be done, this week. If I can actually catch up with it. I didn't manage too last night. I unpicked a few things, but then when I was trying to sew this morning, I broke a needle on the first 3 stitches. The tension was all wrong for the item I was sewing. So I have given up, will take the stuff back to work and try at work to catch up today. If I cant manage it, then I will be having to let people down, and I really do not want that to happen.
I will have to look for a part time sewer in the new year. If trade carries on, and the opinion is that there will still be a lot of work in the new year, with a lot of wedding requests etc, then I will be busy still.
Right time to get DGD dressed, she has been procrastinating all morning.
so I need to pay her a bit more attention for now. She is still too young to actually get on and do anything. Even though the routine has been in place for the last 3 years!! With very little change to it.

I think it might be worth considering not opening the shop -even if you choose to work from home those days and start the new year caught up. I don't expect one man businesses to be open in the down days between Christmas and New Year personally. You could still earn by completing work at home without dealing with customers in the shop. Might even get lots more done ;)

    Just a thought.

Currently I'm advertising that I will be there. But seriously thinking about closing. I will have a chat with friends and family and see what they think.
I have enough just to cover January Rent. But still need to cover wages and fuel costs etc. So I will do my sums etc. Before I make a final decission.
I started off in a panic really. But we shut at lunchtime, and I carried on sewing till 5pm
Feeling better after the day ended. But still lots to do. Luckily only one new job in today. Which took me a few minutes at the end of the day. Although had told customer a week.
DGD needs attention. So time for me to sort her out.

    Dilemma time.
DGD was sick all over her bed at 1.30am! I'm not sure whether it was eating too many sweets and cakes, or if she's got a bug. But today is her school play, and tonight we have tickets to see her. So if when she wakes up, do I let her go to school or do I keep her home? ( not to mention the work logistics). This Friday is her school trip to see Peter Pan too!)
She missed the school trip to Whickstead Park this year because she was sick! Poor DGD.
Time to get up and moving. I've been sat in bed reading my mail, drinking my cuppa and an hours flown by!!

She's not well. Dilemma over! She can't go to school, and this year I will not seethe school play. :(
I will not be going in to work early, so I will alas have to get stuff and bring it home later.
Luckily I usually close at 12 anyway.
Not so sure about teaching tonight though. That will depend on the babysitter I suppose.
Fingers crossed that she is better before Friday and the pantomime! And tomorrow is her school Christmas dinner!!

Dgd perked up quite well in the end. But too late for the school day.
We went into work around 9am. My staff came in just after 9.30
I worked on things in the workshop, and DGD watched a DVD with her pillows and duvet there.
I didn't quite catch up, but only one set of curtains behind. When I rang the customer she was ok, they are not a rush job. So tomorrow the beaded wedding dress can be done first, and the curtains second. Then there are a fee pairs of trousers that need to be finished before Saturday.
Closing on time gave us time to tidy the workshop for tonight's lesson.
Babysitter still coming, and DGD can go back to school tomorrow.
So after we closed I went to see my parents, who kept an eye on DGD while I did a huge shop!
We now have enough meals for at least two weeks. Probably more if I use my storecupboard goods from AF as well.
Hopefully this will save me some money from shopping on the way home from work.
So I feel happier all around.
I shall hopefully sleep well tonight after I have finished teaching. This week and next are the last two lessons in this series of Six.
The next series starts 14th January. I have one lady booked in already. Would like a few more though!

  • If she has been sick I think it's 48 hours since last episode that children can return to school so the school may not allow her to return tomorrow. Even if sickness was due to viral over bacterial its standard policy for 48 hours.
