TBH having posted on and read a number of threads on OS about prepping for future issues or winter stores or just general storecupboard talk I would say the OP actually has a reasonable store and certainly looks like less than alot of people have.

I think the secret is to use a store in a MSE/productive manor, so picking up things on offer/buying in bulk protects you against future price rises or in our case as Self Employed, helps during the periods of lower income as well as being an insurance against weather/supply issues.

BUT there is a world of difference between a planned store, no matter how large, that is full of regularly used items and include regular rotation so oldest stuff gets used first and is used to take advantage of great offers when spotted and a cupboard full of half used things bought for one recipe and never to be used again.

So I would suggest OP keeps on doing what they are to use up stuff that is hanging around, but considers the benefits of having a store of food in the house. Given that food prices will only go one way in the next few years taking advantage of offers is "money in the bank" so to speak and with interest levels so low a better return that in the bank any day.

Good luck OP sounds like you are enjoying some new recipes :)

Confession time.:shhh: Not only do I have the two cupboards of tinned tomatoes, they are on offer of 4 for a £1 in the metro and I have bought a load more. Good job I use them most days.
For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

  • Never thought of it money on the shelf before. I daren't write all of my stash down. This is now an overflow in my shed and as for toiletries.....don't even go there.
This thread has really got me thinking, I am now going to start using up what I have in my 5 cupboards and 2 freezers. Maybe I will have to buy dog food, bread, fresh veg etc. but I,m going to see how long I can go without spending. Dinner tonight is turkey pie ( taken from the freezer last night ) and tomorrow HM lasagne from the freezer. Think I could go at least 3/4 weeks without having to buy most things. Good luck everyone. Will keep reading.
  • I don't know what to make for tea tomorrow night... I'm hesitant to use things in case I use the wrong thing and cause chaos when making other potential recipes. This is all getting a bit stressful now

    :(
  • Hi
Don't panic you are allowed to buy things!
How about chicken curry, sausage casserole with garlic bread or lasagne with garlic bread.
Why don't you do another meal plan for the next few days and then you can see what bits you might need to buy without putting more in the cupboard. X
  • Thanks savetosave. We have had bacon sandwiches tonight so that tomorrow when I am off work I can do exactly what you just suggested and meal plan with what I have and just see if I need to add anything.

Think will do a chicken curry for tomorrow night and a lasagne on Friday, I know I have all the things for those two dishes, this will give me time to have a really careful look.

In all honesty I think I'm just getting a bit clucky about not spending money. Haven't spent anything at all since Friday, not even in supermarkets, and this is really odd for me.
  • So today is chicken curry for tea.

I have also managed to use up all the mince pies. I go to a toddler group on a Thursday afternoon and I baked them all to take with me. The mummies there managed to eat some of them BUT good dead of the day...
The toddler group is held at the local church community centre. On a Friday they have members go and do churchyard and graveyard clearing up, to make the area look smarter, and the other mince pies are going to be used up for their snack with their tea and coffee tomorrow. :)
  • Hi

How's it going? I feel like you been abandoned. Can you see a light at the end of the tunnel yet? X
