Sky or not

We live in a private block of flats, where satellite dishes i.e. Sky are not allowed.

With the forthcoming Virgin price increase, we intend to cancel our Virgin package, in order to get Sky package, do we need a satalittle, i.e. in today's world of technology, is there an alternative?

Virgin package consists of:
XL TV
Broadband
Phone

Any other companies offering a similiar package?

Now TV etc., etc., don't give the same amount of channels as Sky/Virgin

  • Have you considered Youview from BT or TalkTalk? Do you have any TV channels you simply couldn't live without? What speeds can you get?

If you have reasonable speed and unlimited broadband, you could have a look what NowTV has to offer - http://www.nowtv.com/

Thanks boys, that's exactly what the OP dismissed in his opening salvo! :D

No, you can only currently get Sky through a dish (which you obviously can't have).

You're probably better haggling a deal with Virgin if the full gamut of channels is important to you. The other suggestions don't give anywhere near the channel choice available via cable or satellite-just as you said.
  • If you took the Youview service from TalkTalk you could get a decent amount of Sky's channels through their Entertainment Extra Boost, but it doesn't carry Sky Atlantic or the Crime Channels but does offer Discovery. I have this boost but I find my TV is always stuck on Disney Junior :(

BT's Youview service appears to carry the CI channel, not sure about CBS though.

Try putting your postcode into a site like broadbandchoices.co.uk or uswitch.com as it will give you a break down of what's available in your area and speeds you are likely to achieve :)

Unless you need specific subscription channels, which you don't actually say, what about Freeview/YouView?
Then no need for a dish, as your broadband can supply the on-demand services.
This assumes that there is a communal aerial system?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    I think the Op was quite specific that they want as many channels as Sky/Virgin provide;

It's quite clear that Freeview won't provide anywhere near as many channels as the OP's current XL Virgin TV package.

People rarely choose a platform based on the total number of channels offered-they tend to want specific channels. All the OP says is that 3 Sky sub channels are 'somewhat addictive'.
OP needs to clarify what they actually want. In the absence of satellite options, VM may be the only game in town.

I have freesat and get CSB not sure if freeview has it too?

OP you need to list what channels you can not live without then people wll be able to suggest what if anything is available.

I was with Sky and thought I couldn't live without a lot of channels, then I thought about what channels I did watch, and it turned out the only SKY channel I would miss would be Discovery channel, so made the switch and saved a load of money, I still miss the Discovery channel but even that is not worth paying Sky a load of money for.

you can get Sky without a sky dish it is called Sky-Go on a laptop which you can hook up to a tv via VGA or HDMI. According to their website it starts at £15 a month.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
