Cottage_Economy wrote: »My hubby did that for Christmas with a pair of long boots once. I hadn't worn them for a long time as they needed new soles, heels and one zip needed to be fixed and we were so strapped for cash we couldn't afford it. He found them in the back of my wardrobe and had them all fixed up and properly polished for me and everything.
I was delighted!
I think that was a really thoughtful present!0 -
That's amazing - you are the only other person I've heard of who is allergic to chillies, as I am! I think some of my friends think I have invented it - it is such a pain when it comes to catering, apparently.:o
It's certainly a pain when buying chutneys etc, having to read all the small print - manufacturers (and chefs) put chilli in things you'd never think of, don't they?
That's the main problem I have - stealth chillies! Thankfully, once they are cooked my reaction isn't as bad, so I've not had any real disasters for a while. Nice to know I'm not the only one.0 -

even tho I had a list and people were specifically told to choose from the list and not to deviate from the list....... why oh why dont people listen to me..... I did however get the 2 things I really wanted, new camara ( + all the accessories) and a big bottle of Lola by marc jacobs...... here is my list of yet again unwanted things.......
3 x scarves....... yes I like scarves, yes I wear them......... but honestly did not need anymore.... I have one in every colour imaginable and who in their right mind spends £20 on average looking scarf anyway????( well apart from my MIL that is)
The entire contents of the bodyshop......... made the mistake of mentioning I like bodyshop.... and viola..... a years supply.... I guess not such a terrible gift..... but I normally like to choose the products and scents......
A lush bathbomb.......... and yes wait for it... I cant stand Lush:( I know I'm strange just find their products too overpowering........ this present was from my friend who knows I cant stand Lush........ but she loves it...... I got her a clinique gift set beautifully presented...... in giftbox grrrrrrr yes she loves clinique......... and I unlike her actually listen......
a tacky purple bracelet..... from mil... what am I? like 5???? I'm almost 32!!!!
a plastic bauble with 2 mini lipglosses and a nail varnish from mil....... again I am I like 5???? Mil again......
a snowman lipgloss tin.... yes you've guessed it MIL!!!!!!
A Recipe Book for making a 100 different Soups.... Sigh I'm a chef and caterer I honestly dont need a book to tell me how to make soup.........
Chocolates from mil again I hate chocolates and was really annoyed at this one.....
More chocolates......... as did my son....... boxes and boxes of them:( he doesnt even like chocs.. he does eat them occasionally...... a tube of white choc milk buttons from his so called best friend... whos mum knows he doesnt eat them...... in return we gave her son a moshi mosters t-shirt???? because we know he loves moshi monsters........
A cheap tesco smelly set..... I know I shouldnt be ungrateful but I'm very specific about the toiletries and bath products I use........ The wicker basket it came in may be useful tho.......
We did get a lovely gift from our neighbours tho was totally unexpected £20 Zizzi Gift card...... and a tray of delux chocs..... on a red oblong plate, from M&S... dont care for the chocs but the plate was gorgeous oh and son got a very cool toy.......;) lovely thoughtful gift.......
There were plenty more but wont bore you with the rest lol........
Jesus, you're nearly 32? You sound like a petulant 5 year-old reading this post. People were 'told' to 'specifically' choose from items on your pre-prepared list and not to deviate from it??! :rotfl:
I'd say you're lucky you got anything at all with such an attitude! Did you cry and stamp your feet when you opened those gifts that didn't correspond to your specific demands?!
I hope you're not passing your ungrateful, entitled attitude onto your child, although I guess you probably are as you talk about his best friend being 'so-called' because he/his parents dared to buy your son a gift that didn't match his exact wants/needs.
Apart from making my eyes hurt, your post also made me very sad that there are people out there who treat Christmas as an opportunity to milk their friends and family for material goods. People who also, if those goods offered don't meet their exacting demands, deride and complain about them. I really, really hope that none of my friends or family behave in such a poor manner over the gifts I gave them.Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one.

I make lists too. But only because I'm too difficult to buy for. But it's normally something like a pair of earphones and they then pick whichever ones they want, etc.
But I didn't ask for the presents my parents got me. They decided they were going to get me it and I then chose the one I wanted.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

My nan is notoriously bad at buying gifts. I think she just panics and buys the first thing she sees....
My brothers gf received a jar of peanut butter and some rice cakes. She has never mentioned a love of either....
I always tend to get bulbs (for the garden) or tights.
Last Christmas were very strange purple patterned tights This year she did much better and got me maternity tights, in black & gray which I will actually use!! Although instead of the bulbs to plant myslef this time she actually planted some for me in a really tacky floral pot.
Oh and someone always buys me ferrero rocher (sp??) which I HATE! Why oh why!!
I'm also another Lush hater.... maybe its just because I've never managed to walk past the shop without having a sneezing fit and in small amounts they might be nice?!Mini me due March 2014

Ive never even tried lush! Got a massive ironing board one year from (now) ex mil... 'so you can iron his clothes' since he was a dirty so and so who had a bath once a week and wore his clothes until they were crispy I found that odd... it went into a cupboard and stayed there until I left him.
lavender and rose scented toiletries, just yuck!
A usb hub one christmas when my laptop was dead
A regifted aromatherapy set for my 18th (from my mum! And she knows I hate that sort of stuff)Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

I almost die of asthma when walking past the shop, which luckily isn't anywhere local. But I like the bath bombs in small doses, well packaged.52% tight0 -
I always thought that the point of presents is to put a little thought and consideration into it and not just buy the first thing you see and then try to allocate it afterwards.
I agree, that should be the point of it, but unfortunately gift giving at this time of year is just a box ticking exercise. It's a social convention that most people are forced to take part in because they'd rather be known as people who give terrible presents than a miserly grinch who doesn't partake in a commercial festival. Cheap things on a grabbit might be the only thing people can afford.0 -
This thread has made me laugh so much! Thanks for putting a smile on my face this evening. :rotfl:
So this year my slightly strange presents included a potato bag, rubber gloves, toothpaste, and a meat thermometer, although all will be used! :-)
Unfortunately I have quite sensitive skin, so can't use some smelly sets (without sounding horrible, the more cheaper ones it seems). Bath salts make me itch (plus I don't do baths, just showers) and I can't use the little bottles of lotion. I'd really like to donate them, but any idea where would like them? Not sure if a charity shop would take them? You can't get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me. ~ C.S. Lewis0 -

Funny how different things are received, my Best bud is giving me a meat thermometer for christmas when I see her on Sunday and I am excited!!“Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what. If you don't listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won't tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them all of it has always been big stuff.”0
