Got tonnes of Amazon gift credit so thinking about treating myself to a set of small weights and strength rope things. Would get more stuff but don't really know what would be beneficial. Suggestions welcome!

I've got a set of weights which I think came from argos, and have 3 different sizes, 0.5,1 & 1.5kg.. I can honestly say I've never used them separately, only for doing things like 30 day shred, and I had another dvd that used them too..

So I'd say if you're not going to use them for anything else, just shred, you could probably get away with just using 500 ml bottles of water for shred and keep your vouchers for a reward! Trust me, to start you only want the lightest weights!

I did also get one of those stretch things that you hook over a door and can work arms/legs for it.. I could feel that working.

id love to join too please. Have taken my eye off the ball just recently and now with all the christmas excess (and a hol) am 6kgs off where i would like to get back to and 9kgs from target weight
I'm back to the gym for a mix of classes (including yoga to help with the stress) aiming for 3/4 times a week, work & family permitting, and back to 5:2 today
  • I may join you but as I'm an avid weightlifter I'll be going on clothes size rather than weight. The only numbers I care about are the ones on my barbell plates :)

HBS, can I ask how you got into a 'plan' for the weightlifting. I do a weightlifting class once a week at my gym and the instructor is fab, the weights she lifts are amazing and she looks great. I need to do it a little more often, than once per week, to be able to increase the weights but am having little success in finding any plans or progammes to follow, everything seems aimed towards weight machines or pump classes and i need help with the structure - the gym instructors seem to want to direct me towards an overall activity plan and i'm looking for free weights only to increase my lifting capability
  • I do powerlifting, not olympic, just for the record :) Google the Stronglifts program, just start on a lower weight if you need to :)

I did the 5x5 sets, but have dropped to 4x4 as I go heavier.

    Good luck!

I think I should have probably done the 30 Day Shred workout before deciding to buy the weights - which I've now done!

I don't generally mind putting in a bit of hard work but OMG!! There is no way in hell I'm getting through a 1/3 of that workout never mind the whole thing! So Day 1 = I'm giving up!!

It's the cardio more that anything I can't handle but to be honest I'm doing that at the gym, using the treadmill and bike (wish I could do the cross trainer but can only manage 2 mins).

Bought a yoga mat from TK Maxx today so I can cope with the Abs stuff. I will probably do more weight stuff that's in the video so I'm sure the weights will come in handy.
  • You don't have to keep up with the girls on the DVD - I can't haha!

Do the exercises, but if you can only do 3 reps in 2 minutes that's all you can do - go for an extra rep next time :)

Absolutely agree with what heartbreak_star said!! Who cares if you can't keep up.. that's the benefit of doing workouts at home, no one can judge!! I couldn't manage it all the first day I did it, but it does get easier! and then I moved to phase 2 and couldn't keep up, even though I was feeling loads fitter!!

    Perseverance is key!!

    Hey lvm,

I am the same! Like heartbreak_star and Jemima, I just do what I can. I've only done it for a couple of days now but I'm able to do a bit more than I did in the beginning.

    Good luck :).
