One of our neighbours goes one better. Not only do they park two vehicles on the pavement, they have a huge hedge which grows out over the bits of the pavement they can't block with their vehicles!! Result, totally impassable pavement.

Just a quick update - spoke to chappie from the highways dept. at the local council this morning.........and it seems my whingeing and threats have paid off; we are getting LOVELY NEW CAST IRON BOLLARDS installed on the pavement! Oh what joy to be able to step outside my house and not fear getting run over! The contractors will be here in 4-6 weeks :j

I asked my council years ago to install cast iron bollards and they said they couldn't put them in because of safety for pedestrians, yet it would improve safety stopping drivers using the pavements, not to park but to drive on. We even get artics driving on pavement and once scared the hell out of my kids as they thought that one was coming into our living room due to close proximity of a nearby traffic calming chicane.

Would these drivers claim on their insurance if your childs pushchair scratched their car? (seeing as the car is in a place that it legaly shouldn't be)

We are just having some work done outside my house on the water mains. The contractors are blocking almost the whole pavement with a very large tractor and trailer. I know they have to work but rarely do workers like to cause inconvienace for road users, it almost always the pedestrian that suffers. It's almost as if they are a 2nd class citizen.

It's true, Shrek, that the pedestrian IS a second class citizen. I'm not a driver myself so I tend to see the lengths motorists go to to either squeeze their lump of metal into the most inaccessable places that were never meant for cars, or, re this thread, park wherever is most convenient to them with no thought for anyone else. Even in the most remote areas people can't bear to be far away from their vehicles and it's amazing to see them try and park a few inches closer to their destination. Just yesterday a local farmer had to get 2 cars towed away as they were totally blocking the access to his field! I'm counting the days until I get my bollards! :)

There,s nothing I like better when a driver, parked illegally says "i'll only be 2 minutes, mate" and I reply "that's fine it'll give me a chance to write the ticket out". Exit one very disgruntled motorist looking for a proper space like the rest of us!!
