I took something back in store last sale because I had bought it at 50% off and it went to 70% off. They refused to refund the difference...

This has always been their policy. If you return an item that has been reduced since you purchased it, you cannot buy it back at the reduced price. It goes back on sale and you have to take your chances.

I phoned CS last night as I had collected my order yesterday and prce had gone down. They refused any refund as I had bought when the price was higher. He just said I could return the items and re-order again. I even said that a friend had called and was given a refund but he wouldn't budge.
  • If you return something late in day, half hour or so before closing, they often put the item back on rails and you can pick it up at new price, so long as you happen to be in right place at right time. I've only managed this twice. Not that I lurk in M & S for hours on end, just use it as short cut to get to rest of town!

If it's still on sale and reduced further I'd just buy it again & take it back with the higher priced receipt from the first purchase.
Did that today in fact at Matalan on some clothes I bought last week :)

If it's reduced but sold out then quite frankly it's a bit cheaky to ask them to refund the differance anyway, it's just one of those annoying things that happens to us all, but when buying online you do have more rights and a 7 day cancellation period so that may be why it was honoured?

I do find it a bit 'hit and miss' the customer service at M&S, I've spoken to them a few times on the phone this week & one lady couldn't have been more helpful whilst on another occasion a young lad obviously didn't have a clue what I was talking about when I asked him a question & just fobbed me off to the website even though I knew I couldn't do what I was asking on it.

    :)

Well I think its the last dregs of the Christmas sale now: I popped into my local this morning and found the dress I had my eye on finally reduced to 50% off, a price I was prepared to pay. But as I am not capable of squishing myself into a size 8 nor 10, I saved myself £22 :D

  • aw thats rubbish that the "refund the difference" policy isn't quite being adhered to across the company. I only got refunded on the items that are still in stock though. I bought a jacket, trousers, shoes, a bag and some accessories. The trousers were out of stock, so that was the only thing that they didnt refund the difference. Everything else, was refunded. I got quite a few emails trickling through yesterday that confirmed the refund. I paid by normal CC not M&SCC, ordered online and called CS by phone. Hope that helps you all.
No harm in trying or asking about it, if you can get a few ££ back on your sale shopping then thats great! (more ££ to spend on shopping right!! hehehe)

Definately worth a try if it works & the phonecall isn't going to cost a fortune I agree.
Can understand why they would only do it on items they still have in stock though!

Grump! :D Just had a look at the trousers I bought for £25 down from £45 and they're £20 now!
Modern slim leg black cotton velvet - well tailored and the fabric is really lovely, such good quality (sorry, can't post link.)

Bought a jacket in beautiful fabric too, but that's gone OOS now.

My total order would have qualified for the extra 10% but had technical problems with site so had to split in two orders. Very late Christmas eve so emailed customer services... and I'm still waiting for an answer... :rotfl:

Quick update: received a reply to my Christmas eve email... a letter arrived 13/1/14 - it was dated Christmas day! with a gift card for my missing discount :j No longer feeling ignored and abandoned :D
