Beware vets4pets preston lancs

Options
Took our chihuahua to vets4pets at 7pm as she yelped when we picked her up. We thought she may have hurt her leg.
Our vet was closed.
They aked if she had vomited. No.
Had she been eating normally. Yes.
Any other symptoms.No.
We asked for painkiller as she may have strained a muscle.
They refused and said she needed a blood test to see if she had a pancreas problem! This was clear but we had to agree to the test or we could not have a painkiller.
We had to pay £156.00!!!!!!!!!!
Our dog was fine the next day.
What a racket!!!!!!

Thanks for this warning. The last thing I would want when I take my dog to the vets is for them to run medical tests before they prescribe medication.

I would much rather they just took a stab in the dark and handed over a few pills....

Since the incident we have heard similar experiences have happened to people using VETS4PETS.

But OP, what did you expect? You took your little dog to a Vet that knew NOTHING about her because she is registered with another practice. I would not expect the Vet to just give you some painkillers because you think you've diagnosed the problem!
I would expect a thorough assessment of the dog, and £156 sounds OK for an emergency appointment to me.

Perhaps if it is such a problem for you, you should surf the Web and get hold of some "doggie painkillers" yourself, so that you can treat your dog for free if it happens again? (although steer WELL clear of anything paracetamol based...)

Not very fair to be bad-mouthing the actual Vet like this.

We walked in and there were no other animals waiting to see Vet.We went during usual opening hours
She was not examined and had no symptoms of a pancreas problem.
I agree that if we had heard comments regarding this practice we obviously have gone elsewhere.

What a horror, vets charging a lot of money.
Well they have had to work hard to get where they are (even harder than a doctor would).

No problem at all with usual vet.
He did in fact trim her nails and charged nothing.
Happy to pay for good treatment but not for obvious extortion!!!!!

Just on reason why I'd never buy a dog or a cat. Veterinary work is a monopoly with the numbers restricted each year to keep their fees up (my daughter considered a career in it).

As a comparison we had to take my cat to the vets a few weeks ago on a Sunday evening. They vet met us at the door within an hour of the call, gave him a full check up, weighed him etc, diagnosed a bladder infection. Gave him two injections and two courses of tablets - Total cost £83 :T

Just out of interest- Suppose they had just handed over some painkillers and charged £30 and later tonight when they are all closed the dog was writhing in agony because she did have a pancreas problem. Would you then be complaining because they hadn't checked thoroughly?

An animal, unlike a person cant tell you what hurts or where, we have to rely on vets if we own pets. They are the experts and yes they can overcharge but whats to say your own vet would not have wanted to do the test.
