I'm happy with Aldi ....I wouldn't go back to Tesco or Sainsburys now but I definitely encourage the Aldi naysayers to stick to their guns and not make my already busy Aldis any busier!

Thought I would use the recent £5 off £40 spend voucher to get main Christmas food shop.O.K. the frozen turkey crown seemed reasonable but the 2 things we have tried so far were dissapointing .The bacon I bought just crumbled in your hand as I tried to remove a slice,we also got some beef quarterpounders that my wife could not eat as seemed to be compressed solid meatloaf texture, and the cheese crackers we picked up were really exspensive as a lot of items did not match the price labels underneath

That's a shame, l think you were brave to do that as your Christmas shop because it can be trial and error in Aldi's and lidl's! Having said that Aldi's 'specially selected' range is as good as the 'finest' range in tescos and 'taste the difference' in Sainsburys.

And yes, the price labels are above in Aldi's.

    Happy moneysaving all.

I'm not sure I understand the latent hatred for Lidls. I lived in Germany for years, where it is not considered a low class supermarket, and I shopped there. Not out of choice, admittedly, as there was little else within a viable distance, and I did get quite low at the lack of choice (but never at the quality, I was just very homesick )....upon returning to the UK I swore I would never set foot in Lidl again by choice, and initially I didn't..doing the rounds of every supermarket I could..however I found I was dreadfully unimpressed, the price rises were astronomical (something you might not notice if you've not had a break from it all), and the discounting was now non existent - items that would have been reduced to 50p were now reduced by 50p instead...so I made my way back to Lidl and now shop there willingly..buying as much as I can there and topping up at a "branded" supermarket. I've never had anything where quality was an issue and I continue to be amazed by friends who genuinely want to be frugal but would not dream of going there and so pay double the price I do for many many items.

Worst supermarket I've ever been in was a big Modelo in the Algarve - as soon as you walked in, the stench of bacalhau (dried salted cod) hit you and it was untidy and grungy and eww. Dominion (1919-2008) in Toronto was pretty cruddy too although the one we used had a nifty thing whereby you could put your shopping in big storage boxes after checkout and they'd take it down in a service lift to where you could collect it from the multi-storey parking.

My mother has visited Croatia/Yugoslavia quite a few times and she thinks Lidl isn't that bad at all. My local store is clean and tidy with friendly staff and even has some organic food.

I've bought a telescopic lopper, set of solid walnut shelves, big World map, waste bin, the occasional DVD, all my houseplants (ficus, peace lily, draceana etc), disposable barbecues.. all sorts of stuff.

If Lidl had more organic food I would shop there more often. I've been to the nearest Aldi twice and wasn't impressed. Much smaller store, no proper aisles just waist level display stands, dirty looking floor, no organic food. The tinned wild mushroom soup was good though.

    Great post!

I'm more of an Aldi shopper purely because they're so good now, I can get most of my "weekly" shop there and it's all cheap and great quality.

Lidl is also excellent but I just can't get as many "everyday" things that I like as in Aldi so I just go there once or twice a month for the things they excel at (jam, kitchen roll, W5 cleaning stuff etc).

At the end of the day, there are clearly many people who won't or don't want to listen about Lidl and Aldi and that's their right to do. I'm just thankful I'm not one of them and am loving saving so much money whilst not feeling as though I've dropped the quality of the things I'm buying one bit.

Lidl and Aldi have helped me make a serious dent in my debt-level over the past 18 months or so and I'm so very grateful.

The only reason I don't go to Aldi is because bizarrely there isn't one within an economically viable distance, (bizarre because there is everything else), but I sure would if there was! Xx

My grouse with Aldi is that they don't do many sugar free or low sugar products, yet they do sell little boxes of sugar free sweets. All tinned fruit is in syrup and sugar content on lots of products is high.

I use both and like them equally. One thing they don't sell is loose tea and I have to go somewhere else for that lol.
