Thank God times have changed eh?!
not really; the upside was that staff were knowledgable and consistent and stayed there long enough to know you by name. The branch had a manager of some permanence who was always happy to see you and talk through any problems, even to dispensing advice on subjects such as the advisability and/or affordability of overdrafts, loans for sports cars, and marriage. When I were a lad he was a bit like a third parent... only more objective. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -

No, we need to drag it (kicking and screaming) into the 21st century and spend millions of pounds on new development to support a payment system that probably will not be used at all in another 10 years.
"I can't believe it, it's 2020 and cheques are STILL taking 5 working days to clear!".0 -

The reason we do not have instant clearing and 24/7 banking is because the crooks have devised umpteen modern systems to exploit overnight use of OUR money only because we suckers haven't yet forced the issue. PERIOD. They make out that Faster Payments is a fantastic modern development yet Western Europe has been clearing mostly on the same day for around two decades now I think.
Bankers make me sick. I've been one and quickly found I couldn't stomach any of them at any level. They are either too greedy and self-interested or too brainwashed or too scared to speak out. Truth is lost on them daily. And they cost us dear. If you have one as a friend then you are probably a banker too or you are mistaken/gullible.
They employ rocket scientists for goodness sakes. Literally. If we can explore other galaxies by employing fantastic science then why can't we clear balances between banks same day? Think about it, PLEASE!
You're thanked post rates pretty low. I wonder why!0 -
Or we could just leave things as they are and people who want to spend time with their kids will find a way, those that don't are not forced to have time off when they would prefer to be making extra money that they might need.
Lets stop forcing people to do things and allow people to have a choice.
How about let's stop forcing people to work unnecessarily long or unsociable hours?
Oh no, because that might cause you a very minor inconvenience.0 -

Your customers are not so stupid as to suck up feeble excuses, dishonest distractions on free versus fee-paid banking and dissembling nonsense about costs and downtime requirements. Do airliners have downtime? Do power stations have downtime? Do even supermarkets have downtime?
You insult us with your whining. You banks should suck up the costs - they are miniscule compared to your greed.
I'm enjoying reading the opposing views here but I stopped at this one because of how stupid it is...
Yes airliners have downtime, have you never seen planes sitting in a hanger???? Try google if you don't believe it.
And yes power stations also have downtime, they are called shutdowns, the frequency of this varies but they could be once per year.
And yes, most supermarkets also have downtime, maybe not a lot but I don't know of any that are open tomorrow and many are not through the night.0 -
Something else that this thread shows is that people have become so impatient and there is the "I want it now" attitude less and less people are prepared to wait for anything, that includes saving up for something they can't currently afford. Instead they take advantage of credit card provided by the very system they are complaining about in this thread to buy it. And then again they will complain that the credit card company charged them too much interest, as if, it were concealed from them by the credit card company until the bill was issued!0

How about let's stop forcing people to work unnecessarily long or unsociable hours?
Your "solution" causes the exact same unnecessarily long or unsociable hours. The only difference is that they would be working longer hours during the week to make up for the hours they can no longer work at the weekend.0 -
I think you may have misunderstood my earlier point. I don't recall saying "you should restrict things to a limited number of days merely because you physically can or it was done in the past". What I do recall saying is that the operating hours of non essential services should be restricted in order to allow employees a better work life balance and improved quality of life outside of work.
By the way, I'm sorry you feel I'm "going on" to the point where you have become sick. If you're unable to read opinions you disagree with, without becoming ill, then I would recommend avoiding open discussion forums in future, for your health's sake.
I can personally guarantee you that if I was forbidden from working weekends, my standard of living would plummet and I would be completely miserable. Oh, and I'd be sacked - supermarkets don't have much need for weekend workers who can't work weekends...
I suggest you get a better grasp of the English language and recognise that being "sick of xxxxx" doesn't literally mean I am medically sick... And I'm perfectly capable of reading things I disagree with - it's just your opinions on this matter are particularly abhorrent.
You're nothing but a hypocrite spouting absolute nonsense. If family time is so precious that laws should be made banning people from working weekends, then get off your computer and go and spend it with them... Moving your shopping from a Saturday to a Monday night doesn't save ANY time WHATSOEVER - it merely shifts the activity to a different day. A day that may be convenient to YOU, but is categorically not convenient for everyone. Unemployment is high enough as it is, your moronic suggestions would result in thousands of people being sacked and thousands more being cut back to part time.0 -

It would 'clear' for spending next Monday, 30/12/13.
But it wouldn't 'clear' for fate until (close of business on) Thursday 2/1/14 (nearly 2 weeks after depositing!).
