Why dont banks process things on Saturdays/Sundays?

I mean, it's almost 2014...everywhere else is still open!!!

    What exactly they don't process?
I think FPs are usually instant even at weekends.

Why would they process 19th century pieces of paper using 21st century technology?

Do you think a horse and cart should enter the next F1 Grand Prix?

It's a good example of the anachronisms built into the system though. FP's are instant(ish, usually) at weekends but will still have their statement date as the next working day rather than when the transaction actually happened and will be considered "uncleared" funds until the next weekday.
Similarly, direct debits/standing orders don't happen at weekends, they just run on the nearest working day to the date they should have gone.

Nothing wrong with a bit of downtime now and then. It's actually quite good for people.

yes, but surely automated systems don't need the downtime? I don't understand why direct debits and standing orders don't 'go' on a weekend.

It's simple: you, as a representative of bank customers everywhere, don't want to pay for the huge development cost that would be needed to process everything 24x7x365. Or at least, the banks think you don't want to pay for it. Are they wrong?

If you were working in IT, you would understand why downtime is sometimes unavoidable, or the most economic option.
