Hence there should be 2 designated days a week free from shopping, banking, hair cutting, etc etc. We'd be a lot better off for it.
I would agree with mandating a minimum of 2 days off a week instead of one to improve work-life balance. But having those days designated by law is wrong and impractical. If when I go to work everything is shut and when I come home everything is shut then when do I get this stuff done? Hairdressers will just have to open late into the evening if you prohibit them on Saturdays so it's no better for anybody. There's no reason we can't have a 24/7 society AND reasonable working hours for all.

................... I'm sure my views on the matter are worthless.

the banks certainly aren't taking any notice of you, which is why Saturday and Sunday are not banking days....

How about the people that can only just about make ends meet by working normal hours and require overtime to pay for extras such as christmas presents and the like? Is that driven by consumer greed? Even though they are simply trying to get more cash to make the best of things?

No, that's corporate greed - why on earth in one of the richest countries in the world can't ordinary people earn enough by working 40 hours a week to make ends meet plus a little extra? It's high time the minimum wage was increased to the level of a living wage.

That'll be fun. I finish work on the Friday night and the Saturday and Sunday become designated 'free' days, so I'm with family and friends but can't do the shopping, banking, hair cutting, etc that I need for work the week after. So I need to rush in at night and then rush out again to do those things. Much easier to do at the weekend when you have a whole 2 days.

I received a cheque for selling my shares. I was trying to figure out what day I'll receive the money in my account, and with the xmas holidays etc it's like 2 weeks away.

Why have you chosen to rage against the banks for the fact that your stockbroker sent you a cheque?

Shouldn't it be the broker at the receiving end of your ire for sending you payment by an outdated method that not only takes time to clear but requires you to go out of your way to attend a bank to pay it in in the first place?

Why aren't you raging that they are keeping your money for longer than necessary in their account (plus any interest it may earn in that time)?

Just a view from another perspective.

Lunchtime during the week? After work? Saturday morning? Have
    groceries delivered?

How did people manage before 1994?

Your views on the matter might carry more weight if they were expressed in a polite and respectful way.

Did I at any point say that people should be forced to spend time together? No. I said there should be days free from consumer greed, so people can spend time together should they choose to, without being forced to work. There are seven days in a week, 5 of them are more than enough to buy stuff, get a haircut, visit the bank etc.

I'm polite to people who deserve it. People who make puritanical judgements on others because they've dictated weekends are solely for spending with family and if you don't agree you're "greedy and selfish" don't deserve it in my opinion.

I didn't say you said that... And I'm sick to death of people like you going on about how you should restrict things to a limited number of days merely because you physically can or it was done in the past. How about you get rid of your computer? People lived without them in 1994 so you couldn't possibly object to it... Why not close everything for 6 days a week?

Them not being banking days is irrelevant though. I can use my bank cards and access money 24/7. Their weekend branch hours are limited simply to save money, not because bank managers are dictating that their staff must spend all weekend, every weekend with family and friends.

I think you may have misunderstood my earlier point. I don't recall saying "you should restrict things to a limited number of days merely because you physically can or it was done in the past". What I do recall saying is that the operating hours of non essential services should be restricted in order to allow employees a better work life balance and improved quality of life outside of work.

By the way, I'm sorry you feel I'm "going on" to the point where you have become sick. If you're unable to read opinions you disagree with, without becoming ill, then I would recommend avoiding open discussion forums in future, for your health's sake.

I have 30 minutes for lunch and that has to include the time needed to walk to and from the break room. Even if I skipped lunch it wouldn't be enough time.

Leave work at 5pm, get home at 6pm, can't have anything to eat because I need to do the grocery shopping before they shut. End up preparing dinner at 8pm and start eating at 9pm. Go to bed at 10pm as I need to be up at 5:30am for work tomorrow. No time for socialising or family.

Next day the same problem as I need to visit the bank and get a hair cut.

I don't know about you, but I like to wind down in the evening after a day at work, not cause myself more stress.

Right, so after getting up at 5:30am for the last 5 days, you want me to get up at the same time on my day off to do the shopping, visit the bank or get my hair cut.

I'm not aware of any grocer who will deliver for free at a reasonable time for myself and actually deliver what I want rather than "We didn't have any 3 litre bottles of milk so we brought you these baby wipes instead" (Hey, it's happened).

I can see how you think it might be difficult, if you choose to view it in that way.

I prefer to look at it like this: if I call in to the supermarket on the way home from work, or get up a little earlier on Saturday to pop to the bank, it frees up time to visit my grandmother on Sunday. I can't possibly imagine when she is gone, thinking "you know what, I wish I'd popped out for a loaf do bread and a pint of milk, or perhaps a new pair of socks, instead of wasting my time playing cards with granny on a Sunday". Equally, if I had kids, I'm pretty sure I would rather spend some quality time with them each week than drag them round Aldi.
