Good luck at the cleaning job :) I hope it goes well!

 to the 5 kids! This is like when I used to have my friends 3 kids over every morning and afternoon (till 6pm  ) it was actually making me lose my sanity by the end, and I remember her telling me, very nervously, that I wouldn't be needed any more as she was moving away......I nearly went and packed her bags for her so I could get rid of the kids quicker :rotfl: I love my friend dearly, she really is a good friend. BUT 5 kids in my small house (plus the moody teenager who was always moaning) was just too much! I take my hat off to childminders in my area in the same size house  it's not easy! xx

    Thanks DFW,

Wow you had 5 children EVERY DAY TILL 6PM!!!!. I can cope with the odd day here and there but everyday would near kill me and ruin the house ;).

I bet you struggled not to jump for joy when she said she didn't need you to do it anymore :rotfl:

I think she gathered how happy I was even though I didn't say it as I just could not stop smiling :D:rotfl: My house is tiny and the kids weren't allowed upstairs after breaking something the very first time 5 of them went into the kids room  so they had my front room & kitchen to play in which just wasn't big enough. Great in the summer though I used to throw them out the front (we've a big communal green where lots of their school friend's played) but in the winter I was literally wanting to cry or pull my hair out at them trashing my house :(. I've since taken on two more though but both girls are much quieter than the last 3 so it's fine and only for 20 mins after school and a half hour before so all good :T

    Morning

Got a fairly quiet day today. Have a few things I want to get done.

I desperate need to plant the asparagus crowns that were delivered last week. They can only survive in their plastic bag for so long before they die :o.

I also need to get the hen house cleaned out as I have signed up to re-home 10 British Hen Welfare Trust hens this afternoon.

They are pretty cheap and still lay the odd egg and it is giving them a lovely new home after being stuck in cages so that is my good deed for today :D

Other than that I just want to get some weeding done in the polytunnel and possible sow some more seeds.

What is your plan for the day? xxx
  • Hi Steph

Glad to hear your camping trip was a success!!

How did your new cleaning job go?

Hope you have the asparagus planted now? There is a man in the village who has an allotment full and I always buy from him - they taste lovely.

I think we are living in a parallel universe - I have just collected 15 POL hens!!
We have purchased them through the smallholder group (via a farmer who runs a large egg farm) and paid £6.50 each which I thought was a good price.

We have put them in the shed with the door open and now the rain has stopped we will pop up there shortly to check them!
I hope they settle in well.

This is Part 2 of our plan to increase numbers on the smallholding! Part 1 was new pens for the chickens - DH has built 2 pens so far and is half way through the 3rd which will house 35 chickens from August onwards.

In amongst this we now have an allotment, DH has picked one which is all apple tree so won't need much work and I will have one for vegetables - the problem is that they have not been worked for years and so need a lot of work.

Hope you have a good day!!

    Hi all,

Phew i'm exhausted. Had a super busy day.

Got out fairly early and dug over the raised bed I had planned for the asparagus. Got them all planted, maybe a little closer than they should be but I wanted to fit them all in one bed.

Got that done, then prepared the hen house for the new hens, I fenced off a small area around the house as they usually roam in the whole orchard but thought it would be abit frightening for the caged hens.

Went out to collect them and it turned out that it was a smallholding in the neighbouring village. They had opened their barn to the British Hen Welfare Trust to use as a base to re-home the hens. I think I made a potential new friend. I got chatting to the lady who owns the smallholding and she said we ought to meet for a glass of wine one day to chat about our smallholdings, especially as we are so close to each other. How lovely, we swapped phone numbers and will hopefully meet soon. :T

Had abit of a bargain this afternoon, hubby called in to his fathers house and they are currently planning on downsizing to a smaller home so were looking to get rid of a King size divan bed & mattress. We only have an old exhausted double bed, so hubby bought it home. We hoovered it all and Fabreezed it :o, FIL also gave us some spare King sized base sheets as we didn't have any.

I am slightly grossed out by a second hand mattress but it looks very clean and I plan on putting a spare duvet on it under the sheet and beggars can't be choosers. We could never justify buying a new bed & mattress so this is a good find.

Another plus point is it made me tackle the bomb site that was underneath my bed . The new bed has two drawers on each side so can now store things tidily.

A good day all in all. And the sun was shining

Productive day Steph and isn't wonderful to meet someone who you automatically know you could get along well with. Sounds like a lovely lady.

I would have grabbed that bed too Steph. Excellent result. All looking good and you are verging on entering the 8K's ... wonderful progress. Keep going. God bless

    Hi Sweetpea,

Thanks for replying, Will be nice to get into the 8k's, its been super slow progress this year so far, nothing like last year. Not massively overspending so not sure where I am going wrong. Hoping to virtually get our emergency fund of £1000 sorted by the end of April. Maybe then I can ramp up the debt payments.
    Fingers crossed.

Hope you have had a lovely weekend out in the sunshine :)

    Afternoon

Another super busy day here. Up early but read my kindle with a coffee until 830am. Lovely. :D

One of hubbys friends asked if I could repair some rips in two of his favourite jeans, so I spent best part of the morning, carefully stitching and I also put an iron on patch inside to strengthen the stitches, hopefully it holds.

After that I have spent most of the day in the Veg plot. Planted my Onion sets and some Rhubarb I rescued out of the compost heap last winter. Loads of weeding done, trying to keep on top of it all before it gets out of hand and then incredible hard work.

Not much else to report, got to start thinking about what we can have for dinner now. Nothing planned so might have to steal a meal from next weeks meal plan.

Children back to school tomorrow, we have had a wonderful Easter holiday but I have to admit that I am ready for them to go back to school now. I want my cleaning routine back, it is just too hard to keep up with it when the children are home as they are creating more mess than I am tidying :o.

Enjoy the last bit of the weekend xxx

    Hello SS,
just had a quick read of last couple of pages. Glad you had a lovely break. Its funny how we are always pleased when they go back to school though!. I hate the morning school runs so don't look forward to it but it adds structure back to the day.

You are doing really well with your gardening, and chickens- how lovely to meet someone with similar interests and close by - hope the friendship blossoms:)
