Spoke too soon. Just had orange emissions lamp come on.
Spoke to VW Martins to say how strange that it's just had it's cheat fix then an emissions light comes on a few weeks later.

    Obviously wouldn't comment.

Earliest they can see me is Friday.
  • VW eventually rang me yesterday. I still have no issues with my Mk6 2.0 Tdi. No warning light and good performance. This despite VW unable to load Emissions Update because of sporadic EGR fault code. I had the code checked by two garages local, one deleted it and the other confirmed it had returned, albeit "sporadic" VW said to return to main dealer to see if the update would go on. No indication that financial support would be forthcoming. Totally unsure what to do now? VW reminded me I don't have to have the update done but what about the badly designed EGR valve? I'm more concerned that like others on here, the car will go into limp mode. We start pulling our caravan soon for holiday breaks! So, whats the car worth. With the fault code, and if I stump up the money for peace of mind?
  • Hi All,
Yes I have had the ERG failure (Golf estate 2010 bluemotion), Yes VW did not diagnose the problem because the computer said no, Yes it nearly killed me as I was turning right across a busy junction when the engine just stopped, Yes it was replaced at my cost :-( This post is for information only, the EGR vale has 2 controls 1 electrically via the engine management the other via mechanical linkage poss. vacuum controlled it was this part that was jammed in my case. I eventually figured out why the fault was intermittent:- Even with the valve jammed the car would run more or less normally however when DPF cleaning mode kicks in the extra fuel ejected to make the engine run hotter chokes the engine if the EGR valve is in the wrong position. you can tell when the DPF cleaning kicks in because the idle revs increase from 800rpm to 900rpm, the stop start does not function and also when you stop the engine during the cleaning cycle the radiator cooling takes off for several minutes.

    Hope this helps.
  • To add my 2p worth.

01/08/15 Bought Golf 1.6 TDi second hand from VW Specialist (Not dealer). 38,000 ml.
05/08/15 Engine warning light comes on, so I take it back. They clear the fault but nothing more.
    14/08/15 VW Emissions scandal breaks…….great!
Aug15-Aug16 glow plug light comes on sometimes a few times a day, sometimes not for months. I do nothing,
Aug16 On holiday in Norfolk, glow plug warning and EGR light comes on. Call AA, diagnosed as EGR issue. Drive to Robinsons (VW North Walsham). Diagnosed as intermittent EGR issue, recommend waiting until fault is permanent. Interestingly they put on my investigation invoice, which was £50, “wait until fault is permanent and then contact VW about repair contribution”. Clearly they have been here before.
Jan 17- Mar 17 Glow plug warning light is coming on pretty much all the time now, limp mode is a pain when on motorway. Also EGR light is coming on. When I take it to Lancaster (VW Loughton) for service and MOT they diagnose EGR problem, quote me £1250 for replacement. After some chat they say they will do it for £1000. I say I’m going to speak to VW customer services. I call VW customer services in Sheffield and have a fairly robust conversation with a young lady who is clearly well versed in this conversation. It is “NOT” a know fault she claims. Obviously I disagree strongly. We bat it back and forward going nowhere quickly. I say I will consider my position but intend to pursue the matter further. She offers to speak to Lancasters to see if she can make them give me a better discount. I say well they don’t owe me anything. Anyway, a few hours later, Lancaster’s call me back and they say VW will pay for everything…I’m gobsmacked! Car went in last week, work was done (plus emissions upgrade), problem has not re-occurred in the last two weeks.

So, what is the lesson of my story. Firstly it is clearly clearly a known fault as others have described here. VW are clearly aware of it, it should be a recall and in time probably will. Don’t take the dealer best offer, speak to VW customer services, be really calm, but absolutely firm (it is not the call centre persons fault) that VW must pay for ALL of the repair, parts and labour. If they do not agree then be absolutely clear that you will take the matter further (watchdog, trading standards, your MP, social media etc.) VW are in the midst of a PR disaster at the moment. As Jones would say….they don’t like it up im! Good luck all. Thanks for all the previous posts, my outcome would probably have been different without reading the stories here.
  • Just one question I have to ask at this stage - What has happened to VW??

    Customer care - Gone
    Quality Products - Gone

I feel like they have undone so many years of great build quality in 3 years. The issue I have now is that they are not showing any signs of trying to repair this broken UK market. There are many of us rolling around in card affected by the ECU issues, EGR issues and all the cost that involved to the customer is going unrecognized and without care. In my case, they have basically called me a liar and that the EGR issue I suffered was not down to manufacturing faults (despite me providing them with evidence of them admitting this)...

Governments aren't backing the UK population of affected users despite huge press and millions of £'s being spent by the customer for issue created BT VW.

    What has happened to VW????

Have you visited the Facebook page set up by VW owners who have had the fix.

The Volkswagen Diesel Customer Forum (Emissions Scandal)

You may have got a free or discounted EGR, but if they applied the software fix this may just be the start of a whole host of new problems!

If you haven't had the fix I would urge you to look at the mounting evidence of the problems this is causing.

What a terrible situation to be in as a car owner:

EGR = Bad placement causes damages to the EGR and VW show no attempt at helping customers and leaving them to foot the bill.

ECU = Bad figure to fix emissions which now needs a change that leads to varied issues with the car. VW showing no attempt at helping customers. I was also told that NOT doing this work would impact resale values. That was after the dealership made me wait 32 minutes to book my car in for an MOT. 2 other customers present also waiting.

Car (Those affected) values drop = VW showing no attempt as helping customers with this financial loss.

Ombudsman doing nothing and not even recognizing these issues, instead, telling people to go and gather evidence.

VW are rewarding Germany & US customers compensation. UK customers get nothing.

My next car in Septemeber will NOT be a VW.

some of these post fills me with hope. My 2011 Passat 1.6D blue motion has started doing the same thing. I have not had the fix yet so it has not been caused by this. it has only done 72k miles and been serviced by dealer except for last 3 services. I have checked mine and the last 3 services have been done by independent garages. The last one was last week during which my mechanic cleared the faults and told me I will probably need to bite the bullet and replace the EGR. Sure enough, its doing it again. I am going to seek some advice before speaking to VW in Norwich to see what they say... Any advice on how to approach this would be much appreciated.

I am having the same issuee with VW over this EGR Valve problem at the moment.

I have a 61 plate MK6 Golf 1.6 Bluemotion DSG with 36000 on the clock.

For the last couple of months there has been a slight change in how the car feels when going through the gears and a slight lack of power compared to a few months ago. I thought this could just be down to the cold weather until one day the flashing glow plug light came up on the dash and I lost all power going up a hill. There was nowhere to pull over so I had to crawl up the hill in second gear at 15mph!

Kept happening over the course of the next week so booked it in for a service and diagnostics check. VW told me that the EGR Valve has a mechanical fault and that they'd spoke to VW who weren't willing to offer a goodwill gesture. So I'm left with a £1100 bill for replacement.

I've told them that I've seen it's a common issue with cars of this type and there's plenty of evidence online to suggest that massive discounts have been given to others with the same problem. They initially tried telling me they've never known any issues of this type!!

Is there any way I can take this further if I don't get an outcome I'm happy with? Or is it just a case of tough luck?

I've told them unless we reach a compromise that I won't be getting the repair done at a VW dealership, I won't be having any further services or MOT's done with them and I will actively discourage people from buying a VW or using their services.

The catalytix converter warning light is now showing. If I continue to drive it before getting the repair done will I risk causing more damage to the vehicle?

I'm still waiting to hear back from the VW customer care team after nearly 48 hours but any help would be massively appreciated.

Did you get anywhere with this?

  • I have the standard EGR valve issue on my 12 plate 45k miles Gold MK6. According the the garage it's been diagnosed as a sensor issue. My third party warranty company are unwilling to pay out as they claim it is a know fault.

Does anybody know what constitutes a 'known fault' as surely VW would have to accept this which doesn't seem to be the case.

    All help much appreciated.
