    Well, the dealer that sold us the car finally came good, and they collected the car replaced the EGR and brought it back all very apologetic. Still got a warning light, but I think they have forgotten to remove the AA man's fix; I will do it over the weekend. They said it was a £600 or so job (they paid), not the £1000 I had been led to believe, but if you are thinking of getting your local independent garage to do the work I'm sure that's OK, unless you are worried about losing your VW service history.
    Despite the car running well now, we are seriously considering selling it ASAP. Will never buy a diesel again, and faith in VW seriously shaken. Think it will be a Hyundai next!

    VW are in quite a tiz with EGR units, Tiguan 140's (derv) are being checked on first 18k service for faulty valves sticking open during re-gen, resulting in poor consumption etc.. (seems to be 18 month to 2 years old ish).

    They reckon the replacements will be good for 10 years - and they are being replaced!
  • 2009, 1.6tdi se golf 46k, owned from new serviced at VW Parkway Derby. This car on Thurs would not start it just coughed and cut out, the Green Flag man diagnosed the egr valve managed to start it and took it to Parkway where the egr cooler was diagnosed as "stuck open" we were quoted £997 to fix, we managed after much discussion to get "VW uk" and Parkway to reduce the bill to £300. As we understand now "new" prospective diesel owners are made aware that these cars need regular (every 3000 mile period) long sustained runs to invoke a self clean burn of these valves/coolers had we been told this we might not have purchased a diesel . We are seriously considering a petrol replacement. Last year we also had the flow mass sensor go faulty another £300 bill

    First of all a big thanks to randomguy82 for posting this.

    Car: 2010 VW Golf 1.6SE TDI 35k mileage

    My story started approx 2 weeks ago with the so called slow limp mode, lack of power and the glow plug light flashing. No prior warnings, just minding my own business traveling to work on the motorway. The next time I started the ignition the car would run fine until about 10-15 minutes and then the slow limp, lack of power would kick in again. It made the car unbearable to drive especially climbing steep roads.

    I knew something was wrong and decided to take the car to the local VW garage last week, following diagnostic checks they advised that there was a fault with the air mass meter. They charged approx £10 for parts (wires and housing) and approx £90 for labour / diagnostic fee plus VAT.

    When picking the car up, I was assured all was well and that everything was tested. On the way home from the garage, sure enough the same problem started with the glow plug light flashing, lack of power and a slow limp.

    Not wanting to take any risks driving the car back to the garage in the snow the following morning, I called up my breakdown provider to drop the car off back to the VW garage. The advisor was very apologetic and advised he would get the car re-diagnosed within the hour.

    I decided to wait at the garage to find out what the problem was as I wanted a full explanation face-to-face rather than over the telephone.

    An hour later it was confirmed that there was a fault with the EGR valve and that this would need replacing. They confirmed that they should have checked this during the initial diagnosis however it was missed.

    The advisor said that the job to replace the EGR valve would cost £1200 (parts and labour), however as a 'gesture' he would waive this cost to myself and charge this back via VW. I would recommend anyone in a similar situation to try this approach if levied with a heavy quote.

    Of course the gesture was very much appreciated as I was dreading the worst and I was pleased that I didn't have to negotiate any further potential costs.

    I've had the car back a few days now and everything seems fine, however at the back of my mind I still worry that this same problem may re-occur in the future and I will likely be footing the majority of the repair bill.

    I'm thinking that the gesture may have been awarded for being regular customer and also having the car fully serviced at the garage. Who knows as I didn't question the gesture in case they changed their mind!

    I will be raising this with Watchdog as it's a common problem as evidenced in this forum and many others. It is also clear that there is inconsistency between each VW garage as to what to charge for the repairs etc. Good luck to everyone that is stuck in a similar situation.
  • Have continued reading threads relating to the EGR problems we are all having. We have just contacted Watchdog in the hope that they will work towards getting VW to acknowledge their responsibility.

    Still undecided what to do with my stricken golf (2011 1.6 TDI bluemotion with 60k bought in May last year from a reputable car supermarket)

    Really want to ask VW for contributions as others have had as this is clearly a manufacturing fault but my car wasn't bought from a dealer and has never been serviced by VW (serviced before we owned it by an approved fleet service centre).

    Has anyone had any money/good will from VW with no VW service history?

  • Thanks so much nervousvoice. I had a quote from a local Audi/VW specialist yesterday for £472 and they can do it this week. So tempted to just cut my losses and get my car back but I'm encouraged that you got some money back even without a VW history. On principle I want to take it to VW but I'm not sure I have the time/will to fight it and I definitely don't have the money if they don't contribute. Thanks again.
  • My car has had the same fault and is a 61 TDI SE Cabriolet, its done 30,000 miles, however I have a warranty on the car, so hopefully it will be fixed free, but i had to get it towed.

    Oh well.
  • My dad's 2011 VW Golf 1.6 TDI Match just went back to VW yesterday (02/02/15) as an EGR fault has came up, it's being all replaced for free as it turns out there was a dodgy batch of them when it was fitted in March 2014. It was fitted by VW Phillips Lisburn, Northern Ireland and due to it being dodgy it's being replaced for free! No recall was issued by the dealer so my dad isn't too happy about that but it's due to be ready on Thursday. This will be the 3rd one on his Golf with the original having problems and being replaced in March 2014 for around £160 with free parts and 50% labour so he's not too bothered about it but it is a bit of a nuisance.
