This thread is why I won't touch a modern diesel. Expensive EGR fault, followed by DPF fault which costs a fortune, not to mention all those delicate sensors.

My simple old diesel has done more than 200K miles with nothing more than service item changes.

With modern diesels it seems they have fitted unreliable equipment in a desperate attempt to meet emission regs.

Delicate sensors, don't get me started. I don't know how many times. My car asked me to "check tyres " I thought I had seen the last of these warnings flash up, well at least for a couple of months. It's like the car knows how to push our buttons! I sometimes wonder who's controlling who!!
I had a mk5 tdi golf with 5 years of trouble free motoring. I would love to know what vw did with the mk6. My brother drove a Ford Focus tdi for 10 years and swore by it so totally agree the modern diesels are to cleaver for there own good.
Or better money makers for these big company's ......
  • Further to my recent post I have taken my Golf back to the non-VW garage where the initial fault was diagnosed.
The EGR valve and cooler has been replaced at a cost of £530.06,so that in conjunction with the £1677 bill for the defective ECU has cost me a lot of money for aVW GOLF that has not quite clocked up 60000 miles.
VW don't want to know and are not prepared to offer any good will as it did not go to VW main dealer for these repairs.
The fact that the faults were diagnosed with VAG compliant diagnostic equipment by an independent garage as far as I am concerned makes no difference. They clearly know that this is an issue and should make amends accordingly.
I shall be writing again to the Managing Director of VW UK and also a copy to BBC Watchdog.
In 18 months this car has cost me £3300 in repairs.Outrageous!
  • Anyone tell me the best way of contacting BBC Watchdog?
  • @Andyvw79
Thank you for the appreciation and I am sincerely glad the information helped. I hope all the feedback and posts you are all putting on this thread helps others and gets the support we need to get a recall/100% free repair.

Hopefully this link will work: https://ssl.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mg74/contact

If not, then simply Google 'BBC Watchdog' and click on the 'Send your story to Watchdog' link (on the right, and fairly high up on the page).
  • On 18/12/14, I took my 59 plate VW Golf (1.6 tdi) with 51k to my local VW garage due to idling issues, the engine cutting out and the glow plug light illuminated.

They plugged in the computer and advised that there was a fault with the air mass meter. I paid the £240 bill to repair the wires and connector. This did not solve the problem and today, 30/12/14, I reattended at the garage to explain the previous symptoms had not gone away!

I have now been told that the EGR valve needs replaced at a total cost of £800. I was told that due to the previous ineffective repair, VW would reduce this £800 bill by the £240 I spent earlier and therefore the cost would be around £560 (which still makes an £800 bill for me).

I was further advised there is no "goodwill" reduction in cost and this would be the final figure. Having seen all the threads on here, I e.mailed VW customer care and explained the foregoing in addition to the fact that I purchased the vehicle from a VW dealership for £10000 in June 2013, it has a full VW service history and was serviced by my local VW Dealer in June 2014.

Here's hoping someone will see the light........

Thanks for all the useful threads.

I have the same problem as nearly everyone else on this thread. I have a MkVI Golf TDI (09). Engine keeps going dead, black smoke from the exhaust and the local VW dealer say the EGR pipes are full of black gunge and it is the EGR cooler and valve, £1,200 to replace! But they are not offering any 'goodwill' gesture as I did not buy the car from them and its last service was with an indy dealer. Any thoughts on how I can reduce my bill? The car can't be driven to an indy garage in its current state, so I am stuck with VW.

So I kicked up a stink with the dealer and VW UK and managed to reduce the £1,200 bill by half. This was helped by VW UK offering to match any discount offered by the dealer. I know others on this thread have done better (eg the new part for free and 50% labour) but I did not buy the Golf from the VW dealer and its first service was with an independent garage. I was however able to point to previous loyalty with this dealer when I had a VW Passat. So I was happy with the result. So I encourage everyone with this problem to press for some kind of 'goodwill' gesture, whatever their history.

    Thanks for everyone's advice.

I would phone vw customer services. I would like to think an email to them would be affective but I doubt it very much. I spoke with a girl called Laura which I found realy sympathetic and helpful. My case was then escalated to a lady called Lorraine. Make sure you tell whoever you speak to about our problem mention this site and people you've spoke with getting goodwill.
Stick with it keep at them it will be worth it ......

Another EGR failure here, 2010 Golf 2.0 TDI. Like most of you they gave 100% of the parts cost and a proportion of the labour cost as 'goodwill'. I was stung for just over £500 inc the dealership investigation fee. Customer Services won't budge at all even when I list everything else that's gone wrong on the car since I bought it (there's a substantial list).

I was told by VW - and I believe it's true - is that any goodwill on the labour is the responsibility of the dealership, not VW. So it may be worth putting pressure on the dealer. If they think they are going to lose a customer they may relent (although it my case they don't want to know).
  • Same, mk6 golf 1.6 diesel 17k miles.Egr valve knackered. Worried after treading reviews, also not happy as it came on after service and mot. Took it back and nothing could be found then afterr taking back again they told me the problem, don't find out the price until tomorrow morning. But he did say a vw jetta with 77k miles on had just been charged £1100. Not impressed. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Ok here's my update.

I re-contacted the VW dealership and explained I wasn't satisfied with that price - £560 (plus the original £240).
I explained that the vehicle had a full VW history and had been problem-free.
    They got back to me later that day and offered;
A full refund on the previous bill (£240) plus a bit more off the price which meant I would now pay £530.

I said to go ahead with the repair and they gave me a courtesy car over the New Year period (1 week). I then got a call from VW Customer Care on 5/1/15 and they were brilliant. Very apologetic and efficient and stated they would contact the VW dealership direct.

    Call then received from VW dealership with last and final offer;
    Full refund on £240 bill.
83% of the cost being met by VW.
    My final bill £137.

Absolutely delighted and thanks to the contributions and threads on here. Great advice so thanks everyone .

My advice to anyone with the same problem. Stay polite, calm and persevere and you'll get a decent deal if your vehicle has a full VW history and you're a loyal customer.
