Please could anyone give the ticket splitting sites a go incase I'm doing something wrong?
Trainsplit.com will offer the split via Tamworth once the new routeing engine has been created, tested, and approved for use. I'm told that should take place this year.
In the mean time it uses the woeful Fujitsu routeing engine.0 -

Just tried to split tickets for Swansea - Gatwick Airport and back in 3 months time - by looking at the singles. I couldn't get anywhere near the price given by The Trainline.com for an Advance Return (£113 for TWO) but my real puzzle is this: in rounded figures, an Advance Single at, say, 09.28 from Swansea came in at £46. Splitting the tickets gave a figure of £57! I think this is because the tool can only split standard fares but I'm not sure. It certainly seems peculiar. I ought to say, at this point, that The Trainline journey looked a nightmare with multiple CHANGES. In fact, getting there by train looks horrific and I may just opt for the longer and less comfortable straight through journey by coach; it's just so simple and convenient, at about the same price as an Advanced Return by train.
PS Why (above) can't I get rid of the italics in the middle? Once I'd accessed them for ONE word they kept coming despite my efforts to revert to normal font. It worked fine the first time, at the top, and this last time, but in the middle...0 -
Splitting is not a panacea - it doesn't always work
I get the same problem with italics intermittently - not sure if it's a browser problem or an MSE one or a combination. I can usually get rid of it by closing the browser and reopening - but then I have to retype everything
You may want to look at a Gatwick Flyaway ticket - cost from Swansea is £150 total for 2 3 or 4 adults plus £1 per child. No peak restrictions on it - but it's only valid via Reading/Guildford and you have to show your air tickets/itinerary to buy it. It's a walk on ticket - no need to book ahead other than to get reserved seats0 -
Many thanks for that, Dzug. The deal for 3 or more adults is terrific but I might just stick to the coach for simplicity. The italics seem to be doing the same again, although I think it might be because I'm using the shortcut via keyboard instead of the button above. I'll have to try on another post to confirm!0

Just used this for the first time and saved around £9 after booking fees so pleased with that.
A couple of minor glitches that I notices are:
1) The pick up station for the tickets defaults to the start of second leg of the journey, and then when you choose the starting station for the first leg it say it isn't where you are starting the journey.
2) The allocated seat are different for each leg, I guess this is down to the TOC and Thetrainline have no control over this.
I haven't read the other posts so apologies if I'm repeating stuff.0 -

Oops, something went wrong
Train station not recognised, please select a correct train station from the automated drop down on the home page.0 -
I knew I had posted on this threadpablakeman wrote: »So you are saying that they shouldn't release it until all people can benefit, rather than some? How about instead they don't release anything, and you can keep spending extra money? This is a free service!!
Also if you use your head - walk-on services are more expensive, so before this new one became available I used to search my journey next-day walk-on, and then try this same combination to look for advance fares on the date I wanted. Unsurprisingly, this saved me a lot of money!!
Note it isn't free as they charge booking fees and again searching for a journey tonight it wouldn't let me do it with out booking in 2 separate journies.
However I used train split for the following journey
London - Preston - 20/3 - 19:30
Preston - London - 22/3 - 16??
Now it couldn't find splits for me but it did give me 2 1st class tickets for each leg of the journey with my two together railcard for £132(apparently a £500 saving on the walk up fare and the free goodies in 1st class to boot!) and they didn't charge a penny as there were no splits. Perfect and thanks to whoever put that site up - its far better.
And that brings me to my original post in that they shouldn't have released it until it could do a full search for return journeys.Dont rock the boat
