Did you pay import duty and courier charge.

No. The courier service was excellent - DPD emailed me with exact time of delivery, the name of the driver and a link to a real-time map showing gps position of delivery van!!
  • Be very careful with "UK plugs" from China. If they have been sourced from Hong Kong they are usually to the same standard as here. But I seen types which:
    1) are not fused
    2) don't have sleeved pins
    3) have pins that are too close to the edge of the plug (so you can get a shock as grip the plug)
    4) are not properly wired inside (and can cause the plug to melt)
    5) have tops that are not secured properly, so they fall off (or come off when you grap them) exposing live connections underneath
    6) have various things stamped on them "CE", "BS approved" etc without them ever having been certifed as such.

In my case the charger supplied was a standard Canon charger with UK, US and Euro optional "pins". Nothing dodgy about it.
  • To be honest i stick to the main online retail companies as many other people do. im not really interested in saving a few quid by searching the web for the best deals. you may get lucky on a few occasions but its taking chances with your hard earned money, just pay the rate on a verified online retail shop, so it costs more than you want to pay but at least the store will abide by the terms and conditions because they dont want to risk their reputation.

:) Ordered a digital camera at the end of February. The order tracking on the website kept me informed of progress. I eventually received the item about 3 weeks later.

It was exactly as ordered, except that I had to change the language on the camera display from Chinese to English. It even came with a UK plug for the charger.

The item was delivered from Amsterdam by a well-known courier and I was given the tracking number by Simply Electronics. Looking at the delivery code on the label I suspect it was flown from Hong Kong to Amsterdam.

The camera was £70 cheaper than in John Lewis. If you want to save money you have to be prepared to wait around 3 weeks for delivery and expect something like the default Chinese language on the display (which is easily changed).

This sounds like a grey import, if that is the case, the warranty will probably not be honoured within the EU should anything go wrong. This is a risk that some are willing to take, but not everyone is aware of

You were lucky as import duty may have had to be paid along with a courier charge as it was bought outside EU and goods over a certain value. Often its not cheaper to buy goods abroad unless its low value. Plus you run the risk if its faulty you may have difficulty get a replacement and often manufacturers do not support grey imports

  • I don't think there is any import duty on digital cameras.
Not sure what other electronic good are 'duty free'.

There is also some sort of 'global shipping' program available (see it on ebay a lot now) wher the import charges and duty etc are paid in advance by the seller.

No import duty, but yes VAT.

  • I ordered a camera worth £852.85 on 12 Apr 14 the retailer SimplyElectronics looked genuine, based in UK, with 5 star ratings from a genuine looking rating company and many glowing customer feedbacks on their website etc. The price was the cheapest, fastest delivery 2 to 3 working days, plenty of items in stock. It was all too good to be true for me as it was my dream camera.
I paid in full straight away. I did not receive any receipt no confirmatory email etc no response in their 24 hrs telephone no (overseas line) alarm bell went off. Googled the company and saw thousands of customers from UK being conned. Then my nightmare began not to mention the constant shouting from my wife on a daily basis.lol.
I started ringing their telephone hotline on a daily basis lasting my calls 30 – 45 mins and eventually they answered and asked me for my order number which they never supplied in the first place. I had no reference number to complain about as I did not have any evidence of this purchase.
It was on the 10th day after various angry phonecalls they gave me an email address to log my complaint to "support@simplyelectronics.com" which never worked. I had waited now long enough and they still did not give me any reference to my order to work with let alone my camera.
Everything about this retailer started looking fake to me as they would say whist on the phone you are now next in the cue with waiting time of less than a minute but after 20 minutes I would still be waiting. They are generating money via their phone calls too with all fraustrated caller waiting on the phone for a long time.
There were clear indications of their fraudulent activities by false representation, failing to disclose information and abuse of position contrary to Fraud Act 2006.
I had bought the camera for my relative's wedding which is now gone and I had to buy an alternative camera for it.
I then filed report to my credit card bank, PayPal, Trading standards and Actionfraud.police.uk
The retailer then decided to send me a tracker number for DPD when I checked with DPD and waited for further 10 days but they only initiated a tacker number but didn't send the actual product.
Now more than 30 days have passed still no sign of my camera luckily I had PayPal to fight my case and just received my refund.
Simply Electronics have been my worst online buying experience by far. God knows where this fraudulent company operates from or who are behind it but we all have to keep reporting to every law enforcement establishments in UK to get them banned from Google.
It looks like they've been doing this for a long time and are still very much active.
